Mitra is an Indian family name and surname found mostly amongst Bengali Hindus. This surname also has prevalence in Iran and is a popular Persian last name found in America. The surname may have been derived either from the word ''mitra'' meaning friend or ally or from the name of an important Indo-Iranian deity in the Vedas and in ancient Iran. Dinabandhu Mitra
Dinabandhu Mitra (1830 – 1 November 1873) was a Bengali writer and dramatist. He is notable for his play ''Nil Darpan'' (1860). Early life Mitra was born at Chowberia village in Gopalnagar P.S., North 24 Parganas and was the son of Kalachand Mitra. His given name was Gandharva Narayan, but he changed it to Dinabandhu Mitra. His education started at a village pathshala. His father arranged a job for him on a zamindar's estate in 1840. But the small boy fled to Kolkata, where he started working in the house of his uncle, Nilmani Mitra. Around 1846, he was admitted to the free school run by James Long. Dinabandhu was a bright student and won a number of scholarships. In 1850, he enrolled in Hindu College and was awarded scholarships for academic excellence. However, he did not appear in his last examination, and, instead, started working as a postmaster in Patna in 1855. Debu Mitra (born 7 August 1948) is a former Indian first-class cricketer who played for Bengal cricket team from 1968/69 to 1973/74. He became a cricket coach in the 1990s and works as the head coach of Saurashtra cricket team. Career Mitra played as a right-hand batsman and occasional right-arm off break bowler, representing Bengal cricket team. He appeared in 14 first-class matches between the 1968/69 and 1973/74 seasons. Debasis Mitra (born November 3, 1944 in Kolkata) is an Indian-American mathematician, known for his numerous contributions to the theory of communication systems, control theory and queueing theory. He got his B.Sc. (1964) and Ph.D. (1968) in electrical engineering from University of London, on an ''Atomic Energy Research'' fellowship (1965–67), while he was simultaneously affiliated with the ''Control systems center'' at the University of Manchester. ''The Pioneer'' is an English-language daily newspaper in India. It is published from multiple locations in India, including Delhi. It is the second oldest English-language newspaper in India still in circulation after ''The Times of India''. In 2010, The Pioneer launched its Hindi version in Lucknow. Author Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), in his early 20s, worked at the newspaper office in Allahabad as an assistant editor from November 1887 to March 1889. In July 1933, ''The Pioneer'' was sold to a syndicate and moved from Allahabad to Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, at which time the ''Pioneer Mail and India Weekly News'' ceased publication. Chandan Mitra ( bn, চন্দন মিত্র; 12 December 1954 – 1 September 2021) was an Indian journalist and politician who was the editor and managing director of '' The Pioneer'' newspaper in Delhi. He was also a two-term member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, serving between 2003 and 2009 as a nominated member from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and between 2003 and 2009 as an elected member from the state of Madhya Pradesh, again from the BJP. Bimal Mitra (18 March 1912 – 2 December 1991) was an Indian writer in Bengali. Bimal Mitra was equally adept in writing in Bengali as well as in Hindi, and wrote more than one hundred novels and short stories. Many of Bimal Mitra's novels have been made into successful films.
