Mitcham Square Shopping Centre is a shopping mall in the City of Mitcham, located on Belair Road, Torrens Park, an inner southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It consists of 55 retail and food outlets, two supermarkets, Foodland and Woolworths, a seven screen cinema, operated by Wallis Cinemas, along with many specialty shops including Mitcham Square Newsagency which has been owned and operated by the same family for over 27 years. In 2004, a fire destroyed the original centre, leading to a A$60 million redevelopment. The City of Mitcham is a local government area in the foothills of southern Adelaide, South Australia. Within its bounds is Flinders University, South Australia's third largest, and the notable, affluent suburb of Springfield which contains some of the city's most expensive properties. Torrens Park, South Australia
Torrens Park is a mainly residential large inner-southern suburb of Adelaide, incorporating some of the foothills and adjacent to the original "Mitcham Village". It was named after Sir Robert Richard Torrens, the instigator of the Torrens title system of land registration and transfer, who built a large home in the area which he named Torrens Park. The suburb is in the City of Mitcham local government area, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Waite and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Boothby. Wallis Cinemas, formerly Wallis Theatres, is a family-owned South Australian company that operates cinema complexes, cinemas and drive-in theatres in greater Adelaide and regional South Australia. Wallis Theatres works in conjunction with Big Screen Advertising, a company which distributes and screens advertisements at cinemas. Company history This family-owned company was established as Wallis Theatres by its founder, Hugh Wallis, in December 1953, with the opening of the Blueline drive-in at West Beach. Wallis gave up a refrigeration business to move into the cinema industry. In 1991, Hugh's son Bob Wallis bought the Barr Smith home, Auchendarroch House, at Mount Barker, and restored it, including adding a tavern and a seven-screen cinema complex.
