Regiment
A regiment is a military unit. Its role and size varies markedly, depending on the country, service and/or a specialisation. In Medieval Europe, the term "regiment" denoted any large body of front-line soldiers, recruited or conscripted in one geographical area, by a leader who was often also the feudal lord ''in capite'' of the soldiers. Lesser barons of knightly rank could be expected to muster or hire a company or battalion from their manorial estate. By the end of the 17th century, infantry regiments in most European armies were permanent units, with approximately 800 men and commanded by a colonel. Definitions During the modern era, the word "regiment" – much like "corps" – may have two somewhat divergent meanings, which refer to two distinct roles: # a front-line military formation; or # an administrative or ceremonial unit. 24th Missouri Volunteer Infantry
The 24th Missouri Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 24th Missouri Infantry Regiment was organized from recruits across the state of Missouri, October 24 through December 28, 1861, and mustered in for three years service under the command of Colonel Sempronius Hamilton Boyd. In addition to its Missouri state regimental number, the regiment bore the name "The Lyon Legion" in honor of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, killed in action on August 10, 1861, leading Federal troops in the battle of Battle of Wilson's Creek. The 66th Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Western Sharpshooters) originally known as Birge's Western Sharpshooters and later as the "Western Sharpshooters-14th Missouri Volunteers", was a specialized regiment of infantry sharpshooters that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
