Mississippi Highway 397 (MS 397) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. Running generally in a southeast to northwest direction, it is signed north--south traveling from the De Kalb vicinity at MS 16 to Louisville at MS 14. Route description The state highway begins west of De Kalb along MS 16. MS 397 heads northwest through barren forest land as a two-lane speed limit highway. First, an access road to Kemper Lake intersects the highway, later Sinai Road branches off the highway providing access to a small settlement. Continuing northwest, MS 397 intersects the northern end of unsigned MS 493 and a second access road to Kemper Lake. About later, it reaches the northern terminus of MS 495. De Kalb, Mississippi
De Kalb is a town in and the county seat of Kemper County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,164 at the 2010 census. De Kalb is named after General Johann de Kalb, a Franconian-French military officer who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Geography De Kalb is located in central Kemper County at (32.769751, -88.650407). Mississippi Highway 16 passes through the north side of the town, leading east to Scooba and west to Philadelphia. Mississippi Highway 39 (Main Avenue) passes through the center of De Kalb, leading north to Shuqualak and south to Meridian. Mississippi Highway 21 (MS 21) is a state highway in central Mississippi. It runs from north to south for and serves six counties: Scott, Leake, Newton, Neshoba, Kemper, and Noxubee. Route description MS 21 begins in Scott County in Forest at an intersection with MS 35 (Woodland Drive N) in the northern part of town. It heads east as two-lane highway to bypass the town along its northern outskirts for a couple of miles to have an intersection with its former alignment into downtown (Old Highway 21) before leaving Forest and curving northward. The highway winds its way north, then northeast, through mostly farmland for several miles, where it crosses Tuscolameta Creek and becomes concurrent (overlapped) with MS 492 (Damascus Road) near Golden Memorial State Park, before entering Sebastopol. Nanih Waiya
Nanih Waiya (alternately spelled Nunih Waya) is an ancient platform mound in southern Winston County, Mississippi, constructed by indigenous people during the Middle Woodland period, about 300 to 600 CE. Since the 17th century, the Choctaw have venerated Nanih Waiya mound and a nearby cave as their sacred origin location. The earthwork mound of Nanih Waiya is about tall, wide, and long. Evidence suggests it was originally a larger platform mound, which has eroded into the present shape. At one time, it was bounded on three sides by a circular earthwork enclosure about ten feet tall, which encompassed one square mile. The Choctaw lost control of this property during the 1830s and period of their removal to Indian Territory. After being privately owned, the state acquired it to preserve the ancient site and operated it as a park.
