Mississippi Highway 21 (MS 21) is a state highway in central Mississippi. It runs from north to south for and serves six counties: Scott, Leake, Newton, Neshoba, Kemper, and Noxubee. Route description MS 21 begins in Scott County in Forest at an intersection with MS 35 (Woodland Drive N) in the northern part of town. It heads east as two-lane highway to bypass the town along its northern outskirts for a couple of miles to have an intersection with its former alignment into downtown (Old Highway 21) before leaving Forest and curving northward. The highway winds its way north, then northeast, through mostly farmland for several miles, where it crosses Tuscolameta Creek and becomes concurrent (overlapped) with MS 492 (Damascus Road) near Golden Memorial State Park, before entering Sebastopol. Mississippi Highway 492
Mississippi Highway 492 (MS 492) is a state highway in central Mississippi that consists of two separate segments. The western segment runs in the vicinity of Walnut Grove and Golden Memorial State Park. The eastern segment runs much longer and travels from Sebastopol to House, Neshoba County. Route description The western segment of MS 492 begins just outside of the town of Walnut Grove in southern Leake County at MS 35. The road, known as Sylvanus Street, heads east and almost immediately reaches the town limits of Walnut Grove. The highway makes a sharp curve to the north where its name changes to Main Street. MS 492, traveling through the southernmost portion of the town where some businesses exist along the road, reaches an intersection with Chadwick Avenue. Mississippi Highway 488 (MS 488) is a state highway in rural central Mississippi. The highway travels for about in Leake and Neshoba counties. Route description MS 488 begins at an intersection with MS 35 south of Carthage, Leake County and the Pearl River. The highway heads east through a mix of open fields and woods though into the trip, the road reaches a small settlement named Freeny where some houses and churches surround the main intersection. It crosses Standing Pine Creek and curves to the southeast at Galillee Road. It then travels through the community of Free Trade where several churches are located in the area. Mississippi Band Of Choctaw Indians
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians ( cho, Mississippi Chahta) is one of three federally recognized tribes of Choctaw Native Americans, and the only one in the state of Mississippi. On April 20, 1945, this tribe organized under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. Their reservation in included lands in Neshoba, Leake, Newton, Scott, Jones, Attala, Kemper, and Winston counties. The Mississippi Choctaw regained stewardship of their mother mound, Nanih Waiya mounds and cave in 2008. Neshoba County, Mississippi
Neshoba County is located in the central part of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 29,087. Its county seat is Philadelphia. It was named after ''Nashoba'', a Choctaw chief. His name means "wolf" in the Choctaw language. The county is known for the Neshoba County Fair and harness horse races. It is home of the Williams Brothers Store, which has been in operation since the early 1900s. In June 1964, civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were chased down, tortured, and murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan. They were buried in an earthen dam on private property off of Highway 21; Goodman was still alive. Newton County, Mississippi
Newton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,720. Its county seat is Decatur. History Newton County was formed in 1836 and named after scientist Isaac Newton. The Battle of Newton's Station was fought in the county on April 24, 1863, during Grierson's Raid of the American Civil War. In February 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman crossed the county, burning the county seat at Decatur and was nearly captured during the Meridian Campaign. Sherman stopped during the return trip from Meridian and slept in the town of Union. On October 8, a black sharecropper named Shep Jones had a disagreement with his white employer, leading to the employer's death.
