Mississippi Highway 340 (MS 340) is a west–east state highway in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, running from the Calhoun County line to MS 15 in Woodland. Route description MS 340 begins at the Calhoun County line, directly beside a small reservoir. It heads east as an unsigned, locally maintained dirt road (County Road 407, CR 407) for nearly through rural farmland to an intersection with MS 341, which it becomes concurrent with MS 341 and state maintenance begins. The two wind their way south as a paved two-lane highway through some wooded hills before MS 341 splits off and heads south toward Hohenlinden, with MS 340 becoming signed as it heads east. MS 340 travels northeastward through a mix of farmland and wooded areas for several miles to enter the village of Woodland along Market Street. Chickasaw County, Mississippi
Chickasaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,392. Its county seats are Houston and Okolona. The county is named for the Chickasaw people, who lived in this area for hundreds of years. Most were forcibly removed to Indian Territory in the 1830s, but some remained and became citizens of the state and the United States. History The Mississippi state legislature created Chickasaw County in 1836, following the cession of the land by the Chickasaw Indians. It was quickly settled by Americans from the east, mainly from the Southern states. Mississippi Highway 341 (MS 341) is a north–south state highway in the North Central Hills region of northern Mississippi, connecting Hohenlinden (via Atlanta and Vardaman) with MS 9 near Pontotoc. Route description MS 341 begins in Chickasaw County at the Webster County line (located at bridge over Dry Creek), where the road continues south into the community of Hohenlinden as Hohenlinden Road. It travels northeast through farmland for a few miles before climbing up some wooded hills, where it becomes concurrent (overlapped) with MS 340. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons.
