Mississippi Highway 17 (MS 17) is a state highway in central Mississippi. It runs from north to south for , serving the counties of Madison, a small portion of Yazoo, Holmes, and Carroll. Route description MS 17 begins in rural Madison County near the community of Farmhaven at an intersection with MS 16, with the road continuing south into the community as Summerlin Road. The highway winds its way north, then northwest, through mostly wooded areas for several miles, where it has an intersection with MS 43 before passing through Camden. It continues northeast through rural areas for several more miles to come to an intersection and become concurrent (overlapped) with US 51, and they head north to cross the Big Black River into Yazoo County. US 51/MS 17 immediately enter the Pickens city limits and have an intersection with MS 432 before entering Holmes County passing straight through town, bypassing downtown along its west side. Camden, Mississippi
Camden is an unincorporated community located on Mississippi Highway 17 in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. Camden is located approximately northeast of Sharon and is located within the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although unincorporated, Camden has a post office and a zip code of 39045. The town was named for Camden, South Carolina by Mississippi Governor William McWillie. McWillie was raised in Camden, South Carolina, and was in The South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate. He moved to Mississippi in 1845, where he was elected to Congress, and then, in 1858, he was elected the 22nd Governor of Mississippi. Tchula, Mississippi
Tchula is a town in Holmes County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,650 at the 2020 census, down from 2,332 in 2000. A 2015 article in ''The Guardian'' described it as the poorest community in the United States. History The first permanent settlement at Tchula was made in the 1830s. The community takes its name from Tchula Lake. In the 1960s most residents were farmworkers; the properties they worked on belonged to people living in other communities in the area. Mississippi columnist Sid Salter stated that the Tchula area had "Some of the best farmland in America" and "some of the most successful plantations". Mississippi Highway 12 (MS 12) is a state highway in northern Mississippi that runs west–east from MS 1 west of Hollandale at the Mississippi River to State Route 18 (SR 18) at the Alabama state line northeast of Columbus. Franklin is an unincorporated community located in Holmes County, Mississippi. Mississippi Highway 17 passes through Franklin, which is approximately south of Lexington, the county seat, and approximately north of the town of Pickens. This was long an area of cotton plantations. In the antebellum era, labor was provided by thousands of enslaved African Americans. After the war, many freedmen continued to work the land as sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Holmes County is a county in the U.S. state of Mississippi; its western border is formed by the Yazoo River and the eastern border by the Big Black River.
