Mississinewa High School
Mississinewa High School is a high school in Gas City, Indiana, with more than 800 students. The nickname of the students and the athletic teams is "Mississinewa Indians". This school is a part of the Mississinewa Community School Corporation, or MCSC, which also features Westview Elementary School, Northview Elementary School, and R.J. Baskett Middle School. Athletic Conference and History This school is a part of the Central Indiana Conference (CIC), which it has been since 1979. Prior to 1979 it was a part of numerous athletic conferences. The Grant County Conference from the school's founding in 1948 until 1965. The school joined the Mississinewa Valley Conference in 1952, concurrently playing in both until it left the GCC in 1965. It continued in the MVC until 1975, moving to the Classic Athletic Conference where it remained until 1979. It currently has an IHSAA Class of AAAA for the sport of Football. Gas City, Indiana
Gas City is a city in Grant County, Indiana, along the Mississinewa River. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. History Gas City was first known as Harrisburg when settled on May 25, 1867, by Noah Harris. It became something of a boom town when natural gas was found in the area in 1887. The Gas City Land Company was founded on March 21, 1892, and the town of about 150 people changed its name to Gas City a few days later. However, as of 2022 much of the gas is depleted. (See Indiana gas boom.) The Gas City High School, Thompson-Ray House, and West Ward School are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gas City annually hosts the Ducktail Run Rod and Custom Car Show in the Fall. The "Ducktail Run," as it is known to locals, is a large car show featuring vehicles from 1972 and older. Ron Horn
Ronald Horn (May 24, 1938 – October 5, 2002) was a professional basketball player who played in the NBA and ABA. Ron was drafted with the seventh pick in the second round of the 1961 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks. After playing one season with the Hawks, Ron played with the Los Angeles Lakers for a season. Horn also played in 1967–68 for the Denver Rockets of the ABA. Horn played college basketball for Indiana University, spending one season (1958–59) on the varsity squad with future NBA star Walt Bellamy and collegiate coach Bob Reinhart. Following his sophomore season, Horn entered the U.S. Military and spent two years (1959–60, 1960–61) playing AAU Men's Basketball on the U.S. Armed Forces team. Oakland Oaks (ABA)
The Oakland Oaks were a charter member of the original American Basketball Association and the first West Coast basketball team to win a major professional championship. Formed in February 1967, the team played in the ABA during the 1967–68 and 1968–69 seasons at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena. The team colors were green and gold. On February 2, 1967, longtime entertainer and business entrepreneur Pat Boone, S. Kenneth Davidson and Dennis A. Murphy (who would later co-found the World Hockey Association) were awarded a team in exchange for $30,000. Initially, Boone received a 10 percent share of the franchise to serve as president, but he had limited involvement in team operations and rarely attended home games because of his outside interests. Classic Athletic Conference
The Classic Athletic Conference was a short-lived IHSAA-sanctioned conference based in northern East Central Indiana. Formed by the largest schools in their predecessor conferences, the conference only lasted nine years before disbanding History The conference began in 1977, as schools from both the Mississinewa Valley Conference and White River Conference joined. This move was spurred by the then-new class football playoff system, where larger schools were awarded fewer points for playing small schools, hurting their chances of a playoff spot. Both conferences had large enrollment disparities, which did not benefit the larger schools. This prompted three schools from each conference to start their own conference. Mississinewa Valley Conference
The Mississinewa Valley Conference was an IHSAA-sanctioned conference based in East Central Indiana that lasted between 1952 and 1977. The conference started out as a conference for larger rural schools as a way to provide a higher level of competition than their respective County Conferences typically provided. The conference was stable for its first decade, but consolidation and more regionally based conferences with schools of similar sizes had schools defecting the MVC. The conference ended in 1977, with three schools forming the Classic Athletic Conference, and one team each joining the Mid-Eastern and Mid-Indiana conferences. Indiana County Athletic Conferences
There were numerous conferences within the IHSAA that were made up of schools based entirely in one county. Many of these "County Conferences" also contained schools from neighboring counties that were either geographically closer or smaller than the other schools in their home county. These conferences would fold when schools would consolidate and seek out other, more expansive conferences that included similar-sized schools.
