Mission San José (California)
Mission San José is a Spanish missions in California, Spanish mission located in the present-day city of Fremont, California. It was founded on June 11, 1797, by the Franciscan order and was the fourteenth Spanish mission established in California. The mission is the namesake of the Fremont, California#Mission San Jose District, Mission San José district of Fremont, which was an independent town annexation, subsumed into the city when it was incorporated in 1957. The Mission entered a long period of gradual decline after Mexican secularization act of 1833. After suffering decline, neglect and earthquakes most of the mission was in ruins. Restoration efforts in the intervening periods have reconstructed many of the original structures. The old mission church remains in use as a chapel of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland, Diocese of Oakland. Fremont is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. Located in the East Bay region of the Bay Area, Fremont has a population of 230,504 as of 2020, making it the fourth most populous city in the Bay Area, behind San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland. It is the closest East Bay city to the high-tech Silicon Valley network of businesses, and has a strong tech industry presence. The city's origins lie in the community that arose around Mission San José, founded in 1797 by the Spanish under Padre Fermín Lasuén. Mission San Jose High School (MSJHS or MSJ) is a four-year co-educational public high school founded in 1964. It is located in the Mission San Jose district of Fremont, California, United States. It is one of five comprehensive high schools in the Fremont Unified School District. Mission San Jose High School is the third largest high school in Fremont. Academics In 2022, ''U.S. News & World Report'' ranked Mission San Jose High as the 94th best high school in the United States. The school was ranked 8th in California, with an Advanced Placement participation rate of 89%. The school was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 1987, 1996, and 2008. Mission San José (Texas)
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is an historic Catholic mission in San Antonio, Texas, United States. The mission was named in part for the Marquis de San Miguel de Aguayo, José de Azlor y Virto de Vera. Many buildings on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, borrow architectural elements from those found at Mission San José. The mission was founded on February 23, 1720, because Mission San Antonio de Valero had become overcrowded shortly after its founding with refugees from the closed East Texas missions. Father Antonio Margil received permission from the governor of Coahuila and Texas, the Marquis de San Miguel de Aguayo, to build a new mission south of San Antonio de Valero. Like San Antonio de Valero, Mission San José served the Coahuiltecan Natives. Misión San José De Comondú
Mission San José de Comondú was one of the Jesuit missions established early in the 18th century in Baja California Sur, Mexico, west of Loreto on an arroyo flowing to the Pacific coast. Over the course of its existence, the mission was twice relocated. Etymology The mission was named after Saint Joseph and the indigenous Cochimí settlement of Comondú. History "Comondú Viejo" was established in 1709 by the missionary Julián de Mayorga and financed by the Marqués de Villapuente de la Peña and his wife the Marquesa de las Torres de Rada. The location proved less than ideal as an agricultural settlement. A smallpox epidemic in 1710 killed half of the mission's neophytes. The mission was moved to its second site in 1736, and Comondú Viejo became a ''visita'' or subordinate mission station. The foundations of the chapel and portions of an irrigation system survive.
