Mission Australia
Mission Australia is a national Christian charity that provides a range of community services throughout Australia. It has its roots in the Brisbane Town and Country Mission (1859) and Sydney City Mission (1862), but was only officially established in 1996, bringing together a number of city missions across the country. The organisation specialises in the areas of homelessness and housing, families and children, early learning, youth, employment and skills, substance abuse, disability, mental health, and strengthening communities. Sharon Callister has been CEO since March 2022. History Mission Australia traces its origins back to 1859 to the Brisbane Town and Country Mission, which operated at a grassroots level to respond to need within the community for food, clothing, and housing. Benjamin Short
Benjamin Short (19 April 1833 – 10 June 1912) was an English-born Australian insurance salesman and congregationalist evangelist. Early life He was born in London to spice merchant William Short and Elizabeth Smith. He worked as a coachbuilder in England, and migrated to Sydney in 1860 to work in insurance. He had married Elizabeth Thomas on 22 July 1856; they had nine children. Working life He was the first canvasser for the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP), and by the 1870s was lecturing on life insurance around New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand. In 1881 he returned to Sydney as chief metropolitan agent for AMP, and in 1886 he retired to Bowral, New South Wales. In 1887 and 1891 Short unsuccessfully ran for the AMP Board, winning on a reform platform in 1892. Nathaniel Pidgeon
Nathaniel Pidgeon (16 August 1803 – 17 February 1879) was an Irish born Australian evangelist and is regarded as Sydney's first missionary. Early life Pidgeon was born in Bellevue, County Wexford, Ireland, the only son of Richard Pidgeon and Elizabeth Foley. The family were converted in Ireland in the 1820s and were active in the Methodist Church. Whilst a lay preacher he married Eliza Proud, whose ancestors had helped John Wesley in Ireland. Pidgeon emigrated to Australia with fifteen family members arriving into Sydney aboard the Orestes on 14 May 1841. It was a difficult voyage with his father dying at sea and two of his sister's children. Working life Pidgeon was a cabinet maker by profession. He secured employment shortly after his arrival in Sydney with a firm in Jamison Street, earning eight shilling a day.
