Miss Teen USA 2001, the 19th Miss Teen USA pageant, was televised live from South Padre Convention Island Center, South Padre Island, Texas on 22 August 2001. At the conclusion of the final competition, Marissa Whitley of Missouri was crowned by outgoing queen Jillian Parry of Pennsylvania. Host city After hosting the pageant for three consecutive years from 1998 to 2000, officials in Shreveport, Louisiana indicated that they were reluctant to host the pageant for a fourth year because disorganization by the Miss Universe Organization meant that the city lost over $70,000 in expected revenue. Marissa Whitley
Marissa Whitley (born January 11, 1983) is a former Miss Teen USA, having won the 2001 title representing the state of Missouri. Born in Los Angeles, California, to an African-American father and European-American mother. The youngest of four, Marissa moved to Springfield, Missouri at age three after the premature death of her mother and was raised by her aunt while her older siblings were split among other family members. At age 5, Marissa's father was killed in a drive by shooting in Los Angeles before they had the chance to meet. She was the first titleholder from that state to win the national competition. After winning Miss Merrie Christmas for scholarship money her junior year, she was given an entry form by her older sister and decided to compete in the Miss Missouri Teen USA Pageant. Miss Missouri Teen USA
The Miss Missouri Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Missouri in the Miss Teen USA pageant. It is directed by Vanbros and Associates, based in Lenexa, Kansas. In 1993, Missouri joined the Vanbros group of state pageants for the Miss USA and Teen USA system. Missouri is in the top 10 most successful states at Miss Teen USA in terms of number and value of placements. Six Missouri teens have gone on to compete at Miss USA, although only four as Miss Missouri USA. The other two represented Kansas, another Vanbros state. Two notable Miss Missouri Teen USAs (who both later won the title Miss Missouri USA) are Larissa Meek and Melana Scantlin, who appeared on the reality TV show '' Average Joe''. Miss Arizona Teen USA
The Miss Arizona Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Arizona in the Miss Teen USA pageant and the title held by that winner. The first Arizona Teen to place at Miss Teen USA was Jeri-Lynn Beatty who made the top 12 in 1990. Three more Arizona teens have gone on to win the Miss Arizona USA title, including Danielle Demski, one of only two to place in the top five or six at Miss Teen USA. Demski later built a career as a television presenter. The current Miss Arizona Teen USA is MayaDenise Gaskin of Phoenix and was crowned in Gilbert on May 30, 2022. Miss Alaska Teen USA
Miss Alaska Teen USA is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Alaska in the Miss Teen USA pageant and the name of the title held by that winner. The pageant is part of the Miss Universe Organization which also holds the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. The Miss Alaska Teen USA pageant is generally held in the late fall or early winter in Anchorage, Alaska together with the Miss Alaska USA. The current directors are former titleholders and sisters Rachel Saldana (2002) and Sonja Garness (2005). There are three categories of competition which include Personality Interview, Swimsuit, and Evening gown. The fourth judging category is the on-stage impromptu question that is completed by the top five finalists. Miss Alabama Teen USA
The Miss Alabama Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Alabama in the Miss Teen USA pageant and the name of the title held by that winner. Alabama's success at Miss Teen USA has improved in recent years, with eight teens making the cut, although none have placed higher than 4th runner-up until 2016. That placement went to Anna Mingus, who also won Miss Congeniality, Alabama's only special award until Erin Snow won Miss Photogenic in 2016. Mingus later took the title Miss Alabama USA in 1995, and is one of only three Alabama teens to win a Miss USA state title. Until 2010 Miss and Teen Alabama was directed by the Premier Pageants group, and was the first state to be taken under this directorate. Miss Washington Teen USA
The Miss Washington Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Washington in the Miss Teen USA pageant. Washington is one of the more successful states at Miss Teen USA, having placed on eight occasions. Their highest placement came in 1985, when Dru Homer placed 2nd runner-up to Kelly Hu of Hawaii. Their most successful decades have been the 1980s and 2000s. The state failed to place in the 1990s. Alex Carlson-Helo is the first Miss Washington Teen USA who also won Miss Washington USA. Miss Georgia Teen USA
The Miss Georgia Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Georgia in the Miss Teen USA pageant. This pageant is directed Greenwood Productions under the ownership of Miss Tennessee USA 1989 Kim Greenwood. The pageant is hosted on McDonough, Georgia. Georgia is in the top 5 most successful states at Miss Teen USA in terms of number and value of placements. Despite this, like their sister pageant, Miss Georgia USA, they have never won the competition despite having placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th as well as several finalist and semi-finalist spots. Louisiana is in the top 10 most successful states at Miss Teen USA in terms of number and value of placements. The Miss District of Columbia Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the District of Columbia in the Miss Teen USA pageant. With only three semi-finalist placings, the District of Columbia is one of the least successful jurisdictions at Miss Teen USA. Miss Indiana Teen USA
The Miss Indiana Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Indiana in the Miss Teen USA pageant. This pageant is currently produced by CROWN MOXIE, LLC headed by JScot Reid. It was formerly produced by MOXIE Media Productions and Sanders & Associates based in Buckhannon, West Virginia before MOXIE Media Productions. Indiana had a slow start at Miss Teen USA, and did not place until 1991. That placement became the first of a four-year streak, which included three semi-finalist and one 1st runner-up placings. Six Indiana teens have gone on to win the Miss Indiana USA crown, more than most other states.
