Miss Cavandish
Miss Cavandish (foaled 1961) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Bred by Robert J. Kleberg Jr. of the renowned King Ranch, she was sired by the 1958 Belmont Stakes winner, Cavan. Her mare was New weapon, a daughter of the 1936 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, Bold Venture. Considered unlikely to be successful in racing due to a severe "toeing in" problem, she was put up for auction at the September Keeneland Sales. Purchased by Harry S. Nichols for just $1,500, he handed her over to trainer Roger Laurin to see what he could do. Under Laurin's care, Miss Cavandish raced at age 2, showing her ability when she narrowly lost the Gardenia Stakes. In 1964 the then 3-year-old became one of the top filles racing in the United States with wins in four of the top racers for her age and class. Cavan (horse)
Cavan (foaled 1955) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Belmont Stakes in 1958. Background Cavan was a chestnut horse bred in Great Britain by F. E. Tuthill. His dam, Willow Ann, a daughter Solario went on to produce the St Leger winner Indiana. Cavan was sired by Mossborough (a son of Nearco) who was best known Europe as the sire of Ballymoss. Cavan was purchased by Boston, Massachusetts banker Joseph E. O'Connell at the suggestion of Irish-born trainer Tom Barry who believed that an Irish horse was better suited for longer distances and had an edge in such American races as the prestigious Belmont Stakes. He was named after the town of Cavan in Ireland. Tosmah
Tosmah (1961–1992) was a champion Thoroughbred race horse. She was the leading American filly of her generation at both two and three years of age. Background Tosmah was bred in Kentucky by Eugene Mori. Her sire was the great Tim Tam (horse), Tim Tam, by Tom Fool out of Two Lea. Many consider Tim Tam's loss of Thoroughbred racing's United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, American Triple Crown only a matter of fate. After winning the first two legs (Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes), he was leading in the Belmont Stakes when he broke down, coming in second. National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting. American Champion 3-Year-Old Filly
The American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually to a female horse in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when both the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) and Turf and Sports Digest (TSD) magazine began naming an annual champion. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The following list provides the name of the horses chosen by these organizations. There were several disagreements, with more than one champion being recognized on five occasions. The Gardenia Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run at Garden State Park Racetrack near Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Created in 1955, the event was the world's richest race for two-year-old Filly, fillies with a total purse of United States dollar, US$130,300 in its inaugural year. It was the counterpart to the Garden State Futurity for two-year-old male horses. The Gardenia Stakes was placed on hiatus after the 1972 edition.
