Miss America 1960
Miss America 1960, the 33rd Miss America pageant, was held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 12, 1959 on CBS. Pageant winner Lynda Lee Mead was the second Miss Mississippi in a row to wear the crown, succeeding actress Mary Ann Mobley. Among the other contestants was Ann Marston of Michigan, an archery champion who had appeared on the cover of the Aug. 8, 1955 edition of Sports Illustrated. Her skill with a bow and arrow won Marston the talent portion of the 1960 pageant. Dawn Wells, later to star on the television series '' Gilligan's Island'', represented Nevada in the Miss America 1960 competition. Lynda Lee Mead
Lynda Lee Shea (née Mead; born April 17, 1939) is an American businesswoman and beauty pageant titleholder who was Miss Mississippi 1959 and Miss America 1960. Shea attended Natchez High School and the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. Her immediate predecessor as Miss America, Mary Ann Mobley (the first Miss America from Mississippi), was Mead's sorority sister at Chi Omega. Family Mead married Dr. John J. Shea Jr. in 1964; they have three adult children. Dr. Shea died in 2015. The Miss Wisconsin competition is the pageant, held annually in Oshkosh, that selects the representative for the U.S. state of Wisconsin in the Miss America pageant. Ann Penelope Marston
Ann Penelope Marston (August 7, 1938 – March 6, 1971) was an American archery champion, beauty pageant contestant and rock band manager. She was the U.S.A. National Archery Champion from 1949 to 1960, and was the first woman professional archer. Born in England, Marston won her first target archery title there when she was 9. In 1948, at age 10, she appeared in a short documentary film called ''Junior Toxopholist'', practicing archery with her father Frank Marston. The film was produced by Pathé News. One week after moving to Wyandotte, Michigan, with her parents in 1949, she won her Cadet archery title, breaking all records as a junior until 1953. She was hospitalized for a week in 1951 and that resulted in a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. She was insulin dependent until her death. Miss America Award Winners
The most frequently presented Miss America awards are for preliminary talent and swimsuit. The talent award was introduced in 1936, and the swimsuit award in 1940. In the 2000s, preliminary awards for evening gown and interview were briefly introduced but were discontinued after two years as it was felt that they made the semi-finalists too predictable. Other awards include Miss Congeniality, given out in the early years of the pageant and re-introduced at Miss America 2006, and the Quality of Life Award for a contestant's platform, first awarded in 1989. The Miss Tennessee competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Tennessee in the Miss America Scholarship Competition. Miss Pennsylvania
The Miss Pennsylvania competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Pennsylvania in the Miss America pageant. Pennsylvania, including early years' city representatives, has won the Miss America crown on five occasions. Originally held in Hershey, the pageant moved to West Chester where pageants were held during the 1950s. The pageant was held in Altoona from 1974. Miss New York
The Miss New York scholarship competition selects the representative for the state of New York in the Miss America scholarship competition. In the fall of 2018, the Miss America Organization terminated the Miss New York organization's license as well as licenses from Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Miss Canada
Miss Canada is a beauty pageant for young women in Canada. It was founded in Hamilton in 1946. No title was awarded from 1993 through 2008. The trademark was purchased in 2009 by a Québec organization who produces the pageant under the name to this day. According to the new Miss Canada and Miss Teen Canada web site, the title was re-established with a focus on personality over physical appearance.
