Sqn Ldr Minty Agarwal is an IAF fighter controller. She was part of the team that guided India’s air defence during the 2019 India–Pakistan border skirmishes, where she witnessed a PAF F-16 Fighting Falcon being shot down. In August 2019, she was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal by President of India Ram Nath Kovind, thus becoming the first woman to receive it. Squadron Leader
Squadron leader (Sqn Ldr in the RAF ; SQNLDR in the RAAF and RNZAF; formerly sometimes S/L in all services) is a commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure. An air force squadron leader ranks above flight lieutenant and immediately below wing commander and it is the most junior of the senior officer ranks. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its complement of personnel and aircraft assets ranks third amongst the air forces of the world. 2019 India–Pakistan Border Skirmishes
The 2019 India–Pakistan border skirmishes were a series of armed clashes consisting of cross-border airstrikes and exchanges of gunfire between India and Pakistan across the ''de facto'' border in the disputed Kashmir region, which is subject to extensive territorial claims by both countries. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine Multirole combat aircraft, multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful night fighter, all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. The Yudh Seva Medal is one of India's military decorations for distinguished service during wartime. It is awarded for a high degree of distinguished service in an operational context, which includes times of war, conflict, or hostilities and may be awarded posthumously. The award is the wartime equivalent of the Vishisht Seva Medal, which is a peacetime distinguished service decoration. In 2019, Minty Agarwal became the first woman given the Yudh Seva Medal. Group Captain Shaliza Dhami is an officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF). She is the first woman officer in the IAF to receive a permanent commission and the first woman to become a Flight Commander. The 2019 Balakot airstrike was a bombing raid conducted by Indian warplanes on February 26, 2019, in Balakot, Pakistan against an alleged terrorist training camp. Open source satellites imagery has revealed that no targets of consequence were hit. The following day, Pakistan shot down an Indian warplane and took its pilot prisoner.
