Canby, Minnesota
Canby is a city in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,795 at the 2010 census. History John Swenson, who secured a homestead on section 4 of Norman Township where now stands the City of Canby, was one of the early European settlers in the area. After erecting a claim shanty, for the convenience of his neighbors, he opened a little store in his cabin. In November 1874, he secured the establishment of a post office in that store. At Swenson's suggestion, the post office was named Canby, in honor of Civil War and career officer General Edward Canby of the United States Army. (General Canby had been assassinated the prior year during peace negotiations with the Modoc Tribe of Northern California.) The organized system of Minnesota State Highways (typically abbreviated as MN or TH, and called Trunk Highways), the state highway system for the US state of Minnesota, was created in 1920 under the "Babcock Amendment" to the state constitution. No real pattern exists for the numbering of highways. Route commissioning beyond these routes was by legislative action, thus the term legislative route. This included additions and revisions that took place when US and Interstate Highway Systems were commissioned. Minnesota state highway markers use Type D FHWA font for all route numbers and type C for three-digit route markers only if type D font cannot be used. All routes except interstates use or markers. Trunk Highway 167 (MN 167) is a state highway in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. It was created in 2022 from a portion of MN 67 that closed after the roadbed began to collapse. MN 67 was rerouted around the closure at the same time MN 167 was established. Route description MN 167 begins at an intersection with MN 23 and MN 67 in Granite Falls, Minnesota near a sharp bend in the Minnesota River. It heads to the southeast and curves around meanders in the river's course. It passes through the Upper Sioux Community before reaching Upper Sioux Agency State Park. Minnesota State Highway 274 (MN 274) was a highway in southwest Minnesota, which ran from Wood Lake and continued north to an intersection with MN 23 near Granite Falls.
