The 2010 Minnesota Secretary of State election was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 to elect the Minnesota Secretary of State for a four-year term. Primary elections were held on August 10, 2010. Incumbent Mark Ritchie of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) won re-election to a second term. Candidates Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party Incumbent Mark Ritchie won endorsement at the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) convention. He faced only token opposition in his party's primary from perennial candidate Dick Franson, and easily won his party's nomination in the August 10, 2010 primary. Republican Party State Representative Dan Severson received the endorsement of the Republican Party of Minnesota at its state convention and was unchallenged in his party primary. Mark Ritchie (politician)
Donald Mark Ritchie (born December 21, 1951) is an American politician and a former Minnesota Secretary of State. Ritchie was elected the 21st Minnesota Secretary of State on November 7, 2006. He was re-elected in 2010. He co-chairs the Minnesota USA Expo Bid Committee, serves as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Minnesota, and is the President of Global Minnesota. He is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. He was born in Georgia, lived in Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland, Iowa, Alaska, and graduated from high school in Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1971 and from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota in 2013. The secretary of state of Minnesota is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of government of the U.S. State of Minnesota. Twenty-two individuals have held the office of secretary of state since statehood. The incumbent is Steve Simon, a DFLer. Election and term of office The secretary of state is elected by the people on Election Day in November, and takes office on the first Monday of the next January. There is no limit to the number of terms a secretary of state may hold. To be elected secretary of state, a person must be qualified voter, permanently resident in the state of Minnesota at least 30 days prior to the election, and at least 21 years of age. In the event of a vacancy in the office of the secretary of state, the governor may appoint a successor to serve the balance of the term.
