The 1936 Minnesota gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 1936. Farmer–Labor Party candidate Elmer Austin Benson defeated Republican Party of Minnesota challenger Martin A. Nelson. The Democrats did not field a candidate. Magnus Johnson unsuccessfully ran for the Farmer-Labor nomination. Elmer Austin Benson
Elmer Austin Benson (September 22, 1895 March 13, 1985) was an American lawyer and politician from Minnesota. In 1935, Benson was appointed to the U.S. Senate following the death of Thomas D. Schall, Thomas Schall. He served as the List of Governors of Minnesota, 24th governor of Minnesota, defeating Republican Martin A. Nelson, Martin Nelson in a landslide in Minnesota gubernatorial election, 1936, Minnesota's 1936 gubernatorial election. Hjalmar Petersen
Hjalmar Petersen (January 2, 1890March 29, 1968) was an American politician who served as the List of Governors of Minnesota, 23rd Governor of Minnesota. Background Hjalmar Petersen was born in Eskildstrup, Denmark to Lauritz and Anna Petersen, who moved with Hjalmar to Chicago, Illinois shortly after his birth. They later moved to the Danebod in Tyler, Minnesota. Petersen attended school until the seventh grade. His career in journalism, which had begun in 1904, culminated in his purchase in 1914 of the ''Askov American'' in Askov, Minnesota, a weekly newspaper he owned for the rest of his life. Farmer–Labor Party
The first modern Farmer–Labor Party in the United States emerged in Minnesota in 1918. Economic dislocation caused by American entry into World War I put agricultural prices and workers' wages into imbalance with rapidly escalating retail prices during the war years, and farmers and workers sought to make common cause in the political sphere to redress their grievances. The party dissolved in 1936 and was succeeded with the Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party. Magnus Johnson
Magnus Johnson (September 19, 1871September 13, 1936) was an American farmer and politician. He served in the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives from Minnesota as a member of the Farmer–Labor Party. Johnson is the only Swedish-born person to serve in the U.S. Senate. Biography Johnson was born near Karlstad, Sweden, and his family moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States, in 1891. They moved to Meeker County, Minnesota, in 1893. He worked as a millhand and lumberjack, became a farmer, and by 1913 was the leader of the Minnesota branch of the American Society of Equity and Vice President of the Equity-owned Equity Co-operative Grain Exchange and Farmers' Terminal Packing Co.
