Minna Nanitz
Minna Louise Nanitz (8 October 1842 – 19 or 20 July 1903) was a German operatic mezzo-soprano. Lifestyle Born in Seehausen (Altmark), Seehausen, Altmark, Nanitz worked as an opera singer in Hanover and as a royal court opera singer at the Semperoper from 1870 to 1885. She was the successor to Aloyse Michalesi. Her most important roles were Ortrud in Wagner's ''Lohengrin (opera), Lohengrin'', Amneris in Giuseppe Verdi's ''Aida'' and Frau Reich in ''The Merry Wives of Windsor (opera), The Merry Wives of Windsor'' by Nicolai. On 21 March 1874, she sang in the world premiere of the opera ''Die Folkunger'' by Edmund Kretschmer. In addition to her work at the opera, she was also successful as a concert and oratorio singer. Edmund Kretschmer
Carl Franz Edmund Kretschmer (31 August 1830 – 13 September 1908) was a German organist and composer who worked for the Dresden Court and composed several operas and masses. Career Born in Ostritz, Lausitz, the son of the rector of the municipal school, Kretschmer received first musical instruction from his father. From 1846, he studied in Dresden, composition with Ernst Julius Otto and organ with Johann Gottlieb Schneider. He first worked as a teacher, and in 1854 became the organist of the Katholische Hofkirche. In 1863, he was appointed ''Hoforganist'' (Court Organist) and instructor of the Kapellknabeninstitut, and in 1880 also choral conductor of the Hofkirche. He composed around 80 stage works and several orchestral works, including four operas and four masses. The King awarded him the title of ''Hofkirchen-Componist''. Leo Riemens
Leonardus Antony Marinus Riemens (3 December 1910 – 3 April 1985) was a Dutch musicologist and cultural journalist. He wrote a book about Maria Callas, and together with Karl-Josef Kutsch began a reference book about opera singers in 1962, which grew to ''Großes Sängerlexikon'', the standard reference in the field. Background and career Born in Zevenbergen, Riemens grew up in a family of physicians in Amsterdam. He studied musicology in Amsterdam and worked from 1931 as a feature editor for the newspaper '. Later he was a member of the extreme-right NSB. During the Second World War he worked for the nazified ''Nederlandsche Omroep''. Karl-Josef Kutsch, also known as K. J. Kutsch, (born 11 May 1924) is a German physician and co-author with Leo Riemens of the ''Großes Sängerlexikon'', the standard reference for opera singers. Life and work Born in Gangelt, Kutsch studied medicine, was drafted and participated as a soldier in the Russia campaign of the Second World War. He then completed his studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt in 1948. He practised as a physician from 1952 to 1989 in his hometown, together with his wife. From the 1950s, Kutsch built a collection of records and singers' biographies. Martin Wiehle (23 October 1926 – 10 May 2023) was a German historian. Life and career During the Second World War, Wiehle was a German soldier in the Flak and the Kriegsmarine from 1943 to 1945. In the post-war period, he worked as a farm labourer in the until 1946, before he was then employed as a miner in Rositz in Thuringia until 1948. This was then followed by specialist training at the librarian school in Jena from 1948 to 1951. He worked from 1951 to 1954 as a librarian at the Landesstelle für Bibliothekswesen, first in Jena, later in Weimar.
