The Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Cuba (), also known as MININT, is the Cuban government ministry which oversees the home affairs of Cuba. Its headquarter is in a building of Plaza de la Revolución, a central and famous square of Havana. History It was founded on June 6, 1961, replacing and expanding the old Ministry of the Interior (''Ministerio de Gobernación''), inherited by the Cuban Revolution from the previous governments. Functions The organs and structures that are part of the Minister fulfill functions of citizen security, and the establishment of the internal order. National Revolutionary Police Force
Law enforcement in Cuba is the responsibility of the National Revolutionary Police Force ( es, Policía Nacional Revolucionaria, PNR) under the administration of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior. Article 65 of the Cuban Constitution states that "Defense of the socialist motherland is every Cuban's greatest honor and highest duty." Conscription into either the armed forces or the national police force is compulsory for those over the age of 16. Nevertheless, conscripts have no choice to which service they are assigned. Crime rates in Cuba remain significantly lower than many other major nations worldwide, with Cuban police acting strongly against any crime, particularly in Havana. Julio César Gandarilla Bermejo (1943 – 24 November 2020) was a Cuban politician who served as Minister of the Interior from January 2017 until his death. Life and career Gandarilla Bermejo was born in 1943 in Matanzas Province, Cuba. Gandarilla Bermejo was a founder of the National Revolutionary Militia. He was a vice admiral in the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces, and fought in the Angolan Civil War. He was head of the Military Counterintelligence Directorate for 16 years. Gandarilla Bermejo was a member of the Communist Party of Cuba, and a deputy in the National Assembly of People's Power. In 2015, Gandarilla Bermejo became First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of the Interior, replacing Carlos Fernández Gondín, who became Minister of the Interior. Carlos Fernández Gondín (1 July 1938 – 7 January 2017) was a Cuban politician. He was a founding member of the Communist Party of Cuba, and served as the country's Minister of the Interior from 2015 until his death. Career Fernández Gondín was born in Santiago de Cuba into a working class family. He joined the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces in 1958, which was led by Raúl Castro, and fought against Fulgencio Batista and later, against the United States in the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He was a founding member of the Communist Party of Cuba in 1965. In 1975, Fernández Gondín helped Angola to gain independence from Portugal; he was one of the first Cubans to visit Angola, and was appointed second chief of the military mission there. Corps General Abelardo Colomé Ibarra (born 13 September 1939 in Santiago de Cuba, Oriente Province, Cuba) was a Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba and the Cuban Minister of the Interior, serving in the latter position from 1989, until his retirement in October, 2015. Sergio del Valle Jiménez (15 April 1927—15 November 2007) was a high-ranking Cuban military and government official who served as army chief of staff during the 1962 Missile Crisis and headed various cabinet ministries during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
