The Ministry of Local Government is a Ministry (government department), ministry in Zambia. It is headed by the Minister of Local Government. In 2012 the Environmental Protection portfolio was transferred to the Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Early Education portfolio to the Ministry of Education (Zambia), Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education, with the department renamed the Ministry of Local Government and Housing. Sikota Wina
Sikota Wina (31 August 1931 – 15 June 2022) was a Zambian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Council and the National Assembly and the country's first Minister of Health. He also held the posts of Minister for Local Government and Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Tourism. Biography Wina was born in Mongu in 1931. His father was Chief Minister to the Paramount Chief of Barotseland. He attended Kafue Training School and then Munali Secondary School in Lusaka, before going on to study at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. However, he was expelled from the university due to his political activity. Wina returned to Northern Rhodesia and worked in the Information Department of the colonial government, and in 1954 he was arrested for entering a whites-only restaurant. John "JP" Phiri (born 3 May 1962) is a Zimbabwean retired footballer. Early life Born on 3 May 1962, John Phiri is the son of former Rhodesia striker July Phiri. He first played with foremost local team, Rio Tinto FC Under-13s (renamed Eiffel Flats in the mid-70s). Football career Phiri was coached at Rio Tinto by Peter Phiri (c.1938 – 23 March 2023). Emmanuel Tawanda Chenda (born 25 December 1952) is a Zambian politician and diplomat. He served as Member of the National Assembly for Bwana Mkubwa between 2011 and 2016. He also held the posts of Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry and Minister of Local Government and Housing between 2011 and 2015. In November 2017 he was appointed Ambassador to neighbouring Zimbabwe. The Patriotic Front (PF) is a social democratic political party in Zambia. The party was formed by Michael Sata as a breakaway party of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 2001 after the President Frederick Chiluba nominated Levy Mwanawasa as its presidential candidate for 2001 elections. The party's main base of support are usually the youth and poor people in urban centres (although this support wavered starting in 2021), as well as members of the Bemba people in Copperbelt Province and Lusaka Province. After several years, the PF gained power in the 2011 general elections, and governed until the 2021 elections. Formation The Patriotic Front was formed as a political party in 2001. Nkandu Phoebe Luo (born 21 December 1951) is a Zambian microbiologist and politician who was a vice presidential candidate for the Patriotic Front in the August 2021 election. She is a microbiologist who previously served as Head of Pathology and Microbiology at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka and has carried out extensive research into HIV/AIDS. Early life and education Luo was born at Lubwa Mission Hospital in Chinsali on 21 December 1951. Her parents were both teachers and Luo was one of the eight surviving children. Movement For Multi-Party Democracy
The Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) also known as New Hope MMD is a political party in Zambia. Originally formed to oust the previous government, MMD controlled an absolute majority in parliament between 1991 and 2001, when its past leader, Frederick Chiluba was President of Zambia.
