Introduction The Ministry of Justice (headed by the Minister of Justice) was established in 2001 after having severed ties with the Ministry of National Security and Justice. As a result, prior to the change in 2001, there are past individuals who were referred to as the Minister of National Security and Justice. Additionally, certain Ministers of Justice has also served simultaneously as the Attorney General of Jamaica. Eli Matalon
Eli Joseph Matalon, OJ (January 9, 1924 – October 31, 1999) was a Jamaican businessman and politician, representing the People's National Party (PNP). He served as Mayor of Kingston from 1971 to 1973, as Minister of Education from 1973 to 1974, and as the first Minister of National Security and Justice from 1974 to 1976. Early life and education Matalon was born Eleyahu Joseph Matalon on January 9, 1924 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was seventh of eleven children born to Joseph Isaac Matalon, merchant, and Florizel Madge Matalon (née Henriques). Matalon was educated at Kingston College. Carl Rattray
Raphael Carl Rattray QC (18 September 1929 – 14 March 2012) was a Jamaican jurist and politician. Rattray was born in 1929 in St. Elizabeth. He began his career in law in England before being called to the Jamaica Bar in 1958. In 1969, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel. He was also a founder of the law firm of Rattray, Patterson, Rattray. Political career Rattray was one of the founding members of the People's National Party as well as a founding member and past chairman of the Jamaica Council for Human Rights. From 1978 to 1980, Rattray was the leader of government business in the Senate. In 1989, he was elected as the MP for the constituency of South East St Catherine. Oswald Harding
Oswald Gaskell Harding (born 3 November 1935) is a Jamaican former Labour Party politician, and the longest-serving senator in the nation's history. He was born in Kingston. Harding was the first person to serve as President of the Senate of Jamaica for two non-consecutive tenures, serving from 1980 to 1984 and from 2007 to 2011. First appointed to the Senate in 1977, he served in the body continuously until 2002, and rejoined the Senate from 2007 until his retirement from politics in 2011. His first period as a senator was the longest continuous tenure in the body's history. Dorothy Lightbourne
Dorothy Lightbourne is the former Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Jamaica from September 2007 to July 2011 when she was removed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding and replaced by Delroy Chuck as Minister of Justice and by Ransford Braham as Attorney General. Delroy Chuck
Delroy Chuck is a Jamaican lawyer, journalist and politician. He is currently (2016) the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Saint Andrew North Eastern and the Minister of Justice. Chuck previously served as the Minister of Justice from 2011 to 2012 and as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. Mark Jefferson Golding (born 19 July 1965) is a Jamaican attorney, investment banker, and politician who has been Opposition Leader of Jamaica and President of the People's National Party since November 2020, following the 2020 Presidential Election. He was a member of the Senate of Jamaica from 2007 to 2017 and served as Ministry of Justice (Jamaica), Minister of Justice from 2012 to 2016.
