Eli Matalon
Eli Joseph Matalon, OJ (January 9, 1924 – October 31, 1999) was a Jamaican businessman and politician, representing the People's National Party (PNP). He served as Mayor of Kingston from 1971 to 1973, as Minister of Education from 1973 to 1974, and as the first Minister of National Security and Justice from 1974 to 1976. Early life and education Matalon was born Eleyahu Joseph Matalon on January 9, 1924 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was seventh of eleven children born to Joseph Isaac Matalon, merchant, and Florizel Madge Matalon (née Henriques). Matalon was educated at Kingston College. Military service During World War II, Matalon served as a flying officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a bomber pilot in the 6th Group Bomber Command. Ralph Brown (politician)
Ralph Eugene Brown OJ, CD (May 17, 1924 – 1999) was a Jamaican politician who represented the People's National Party (PNP). He served twice as mayor of Kingston from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1986 to 1989. He was Minister of Works (1978–1980), and Minister of Local Government and Community Development (1989–1992). Early life and education Brown was born on May 17, 1924, in Kingston. He was educated at Kingston Senior School, now Kingston High School. Political career Brown first served as a Councillor for the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) from 1950 to 1958. In the 1958 Federal election, he defeated George P McFarlane of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) by 2,042 votes to become the Member of Parliament for the West Indies Federation from the parish of Kingston. Mico University College
The Mico University College (The Mico) is an institution of higher education in Kingston, Jamaica. History The Mico was founded in 1835 through the Lady Mico Charity, one of four teacher training institutions established during this period in the British colonies and the only one to survive until the present. Jane Mico had died in 1670 in England and she left £1,000 to relieve slavery and it accrued interest until it was worth over £100,000. Thomas Fowell Buxton and abolitionist judge Stephen Lushington took an interest in the bequest that had been stuck for 200 years. They believed that her bequest would supply education in Jamaica and elsewhere. They were able to establish a new set of trustees for Mico's funds. Lushington and Buxton were trustees and they obtained government grants that were used to supplement the fund.
