The Ministry of the Overseas (French: ''Ministère des Outre-mer'') is a ministry of the Government of France, responsible for overseeing the overseas departments, collectivities and territories of the French Republic. It is headed by the Minister of the Overseas, Jean-François Carenco, since July 2022. History Originally part of the Ministry of the Navy as a secretariat, it became a formal ministry on 20 March 1894 as the Ministry of the Colonies (''French: Ministère des Colonies''), by a law of the government of Jean Casimir-Perier. By a decree of 26 January 1946, its name was changed to the current Ministry of Overseas. The Government of France ( French: ''Gouvernement français''), officially the Government of the French Republic (''Gouvernement de la République française'' ), exercises executive power in France. It is composed of the Prime Minister, who is the head of government, as well as both senior and junior ministers. The Council of Ministers, the main executive organ of the Government, was established in the Constitution in 1958. Its members meet weekly at the Élysée Palace in Paris. Overseas France (french: France d'outre-mer) consists of 13 France, French-administered territories outside Europe, mostly the remains of the French colonial empire that chose to remain a part of the French state under various statuses after decolonization. The Ministry of the Navy (french: Ministère de la Marine) was a section of the France, French government – apart from the Ministry of War (France), Ministry of War – that was in charge of the French navy and colonies. The ministry combined the administration of the French Navy, navy, the colonies like New France and seaborne trade helping for example the French East India Company. A widely held view at the time was that for states to be powerful, wealthy and prestigious, colonies in the New World need to be maintained for their consequent trade. Jean Paul Pierre Casimir-Perier (; 8 November 1847 – 11 March 1907) was a French politician who served as President of France from 1894 to 1895. Biography He was born in Paris, the son of Auguste Casimir-Perier, the grandson of Casimir Pierre Perier, premier of Louis Philippe, and the great grandson of Claude Périer, one of the founders of the Bank of France. He entered public life as secretary to his father, who was Minister of the Interior under the presidency of Thiers. In 1874 he was elected General Councillor of the Aube ''département'', and was sent by the same ''département'' to the Chamber of Deputies in the general elections of 1876, and he was always re-elected until his presidency. The Borne government is the forty-third government of the French Fifth Republic, formed on 16 May 2022 and headed by Élisabeth Borne as Prime Minister under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. Context Formation On 16 May 2022, Jean Castex tendered the resignation of his government to the President of the Republic.
