The politics of Antigua and Barbuda takes place in a framework of a unitary parliamentary representative democratic monarchy, wherein the Sovereign of Antigua and Barbuda is the head of state, appointing a Governor-General to act as vice-regal representative in the nation. A Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor-General as the head of government, and of a multi-party system; the Prime Minister advises the Governor-General on the appointment of a Council of Ministers. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the Parliament. Appointed by the Governor-General, the Attorney-General of Antigua and Barbuda serves as the primary legal advisor to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. Background A person must be a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda with the right to practice law in order to be eligible to hold or perform duties in the office of Attorney General. The Attorney-General shall be a Minister by virtue of holding the office of Attorney-General, and the provisions of subsections (3) to (6) of section 69 of the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda shall apply to the office of Attorney-General if he is an elected member of the House at the time of his appointment or later becomes such a member. If the Attorney General is a member of the House by virtue of his position in the House, the Governor General may designate him as a Minister. Sir Lester Bryant Bird KNH (21 February 1938 – 9 August 2021) was an Antigua and Barbuda politician and athlete who served as the second prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 1994 to 2004. Steadroy Benjamin
Steadroy "Cutie" Benjamin is an Antiguan lawyer and politician, who is the current minister of Justice and Attorney General of Antigua and Barbuda. He previously served as Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda. A lawyer by training, Benjamin represented Ivor Bird, the brother of Prime Minister Lester Bird, following his arrest for the attempted smuggling of cocaine. He was then returned as the Member of Parliament for St John's City South, representing Bird's Labour Party, and was re-elected during the 1999 general election with 845 votes, defeating the United Progressive Party candidate Vaughn Walter.
