The Ministry of Justice (MJ; pt, Ministério da Justiça, tet, Ministeriu Justisa) is the government department of East Timor accountable for the administration of justice. Functions The Ministry is responsible for the design, implementation, coordination and evaluation of policy for the following areas: * justice; * law and human rights;and * land and property. It is based on a design first used when the country unilaterally declared independence on 28 November 1975. The Constitution of East Timor entered into force on 20 May 2002, and was the country's first constitution after it gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and from Indonesia, which invaded East Timor on 7 December 1975 and left in 1999 following a UN-sponsored referendum.
