Overview Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a major problem in Somaliland with a prevalence close to 98%. Somaliland has one of the worst maternal mortality ratios in the world, estimated to be between 1400 and 1000 per 100,000 live births. Life expectancy at birth is between 47 and 57 years. The infant mortality rate is 90/1000 while the under- five mortality is about 145/1000. Fully immunized child is a mere 5%. Environmental sanitation is highly challenged. Hargeisa
Hargeisa (; so, Hargeysa, ar, هرجيسا) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Somaliland. It is located in the Maroodi Jeex region of the Horn of Africa. It succeeded Burco as the capital of the British Somaliland Protectorate in 1941. Hargeisa is the largest city in Somaliland, and also served as the capital of the Isaaq Sultanate during the mid-to-late 19th century. Hargeisa was founded as a watering and trading stop between the coast and the interior by the Isaaq Sultanate. Maroodi Jeex
Marodi Jeh ( so, Maroodi Jeex, ar, مرودي جيح) is an administrative region ('' gobol'') in western Somaliland. It is the most populous region of the country. It is bordered by Awdal to the west, Sahil to the north, Togdheer to the east and Ethiopia to the south. Marodi Jeh was created by splitting the previously existing region (gobolka) Woqooyi Galbeed in two, the other part being Sahil. In 2007 the region of Woqooyi Galbeed was renamed to Maroodi Jeex (Chapter 1, Article 2 3 ]). Woqooyi Galbeed was thus much larger than Marodi Jeh. Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. Saleban Essa Ahmed "Haglotosiye" ( so, Saleeban Ciise Axmed “Xaglatoosiye”), is a prominent Somali politician who was the leader of the SSC Movement and served as Somaliland's Minister of Health. Haglotosiye has had an elaborate career in Somali politics, in 2009 he run as presidential candidate in the Puntland elections. After he lost the election he created Hoggaanka Badbaadada iyo Mideynta SSC (HBM-SSC), which had a main purpose of liberating the Sool, Sanaag and Ayn regions from Somaliland. However, he joined Somaliland after an agreement in 2012.
