Minister Of Defence (Sri Lanka)
The Minister of Defence is an appointment in the Cabinet of Sri Lanka who is responsible for the implementation of the Government of Sri Lankas defence policy and the headquarters of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. The post was first created in 1947 as Minister of External Affairs and Defence, in 1978 the Ministry of External Affairs and Defence separated into two ministries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Sri Lanka), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence (Sri Lanka), Ministry of Defence. Prior to the separation of the post the Minister of External Affairs and Defence was held by the Prime Minister of Ceylon, Prime Minister since 1947, with a ''Parliamentary Secretary for Defence and External Affairs'' who was an elected parliamentarian and was the ''de facto'' foreign minister. The Ministry of Defence ( Sinhala: රාජ්ය ආරක්ෂක අමාත්යාංශය ''Rājya ārakshaka amāthyanshaya''; Tamil: பாதுகாப்பு அமைச்சகம்) is the cabinet ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka responsible for implementation of government defence policy and acts as the overall headquarters of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence states that its principal objectives are the formulation, co-ordination and the execution of policies in relation to the national security. With the end of the Cold War, the MOD does not foresee any short-term conventional military threat, the main threat to Sri Lanka having been the now-defunct organization, the LTTE and Islamic Terrorism. Wijeyananda Dahanayake
Wijeyananda Dahanayake ( si, විජයානන්ද දහනායක ta, விஜயானந்த தகநாயக்கா; 22 October 1902 – 4 May 1997) was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the Prime Minister of Ceylon from September 1959 to March 1960. Born to as twin to a conservative family in Galle as Don Wijeyananda Dahanayake, he was educated at Richmond College, Galle and S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He became a teacher at St. Aloysius' College, Galle before entering active politics having been elected to the Galle Municipal Council in 1939 as a leftist and served as Mayor of Galle. In 1944, he was elected to the State Council of Ceylon and was thereafter elected to the House of Representatives. Minister For Internal Security (Ceylon)
The Minister for Internal Security was a cabinet ministry of the Government of Ceylon that existed from January 1960 to March 1960 during the caretaker government of W. Dahanayake. Senator Layard Jayasundera served as Minister for Internal Security and Sydney de Zoysa served as Permanent Secretary. The Ministry had under it the Ceylon Police Force which at the time was tasked with internal security duties and had prior to January 1960, been under the Minister of Justice briefly after the Bandaranaike assassination. The police had traditionally been under the Ministry of External Affairs and Defence, which was a portfolio retained by the Prime Minister of Ceylon.
