Minister For Transport Of Luxembourg
The Minister for Transport (french: Ministre des Transports) was a position in the Luxembourgian cabinet. The Minister for Transport was responsible for maintenance and revision of the road network, operation of public transport, and regulation of aviation and waterways. On 23 July 2009, the position was merged with those of the Ministry for the Environment and Minister for Public Works to form the new position of Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, under Claude Wiseler. Robert Schaffner
Robert Schaffner (24 July 1905 – 2 August 1979) was a Luxembourgian politician. A founding member of the Patriotic and Democratic Group (GPD), now the Democratic Party, Schaffner entered politics after the German occupation during the Second World War. In 1945, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, in which he would remain (including spells as a government minister) until his death over three decades later. He entered Pierre Dupong's government in 1947 as Minister for Public Works and Minister for Transport, replacing the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party's Victor Bodson. He remained in these positions for four years, before the ejection of the GPD from government in favour of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party saw the roles reverse and Bodson return to the cabinet in Schaffner's place. Jacques Santer (born 18 May 1937) is a Luxembourg politician who served as the 9th President of the European Commission from 1995 to 1999. He served as Finance Minister of Luxembourg from 1979 until 1989, and the 20th Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1984 to 1995, as a member of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), which was the leading party in the Luxembourg government between 1979 and 2013. Joseph ("Josy") Barthel (24 April 1927 – 7 July 1992) was a Luxembourgish athlete. He was the surprise winner of the Men's 1500 metres at the 1952 Summer Olympics, and the only athlete representing Luxembourg to have won a gold medal at the Olympics. Besides athletics, Barthel also led successful careers in both chemistry and politics. Biography Born in Mamer, Josy Barthel's abilities as a middle-distance runner were discovered during World War II. His first fame came by winning the 800 m at the Military World Championships in Berlin in 1947. The next year at Military World Championships in Brussels he won both 800 m and 1500 m. Gaston Egmond Thorn (3 September 192826 August 2007) was a Luxembourg politician who served in a number of high-profile positions, both domestically and internationally. Amongst the posts that he held were the 19th Prime Minister of Luxembourg (1974–1979), President of the United Nations General Assembly (1975), and the seventh President of the European Commission (1981–1985). Marcel Mart (10 May 1927 – 15 November 2019) was a Luxembourgish politician, jurist, and businessman. Biography Mart was born in Esch-sur-Alzette. He studied law in Paris and at the University of Montpellier graduating in 1953. After university, he practiced law in Luxembourg for a short time. Albert Bousser (8 February 1906 – 2 May 1995) was a Luxembourgish politician, railway inspector, and trade unionist. Born on 8 February 1906 in Alzingen, Bousser studied in Paris at the École du génie civil, after which he became a railway inspector for Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, in which capacity he worked until 1969. He worked for the railway workers' union, first as Secretary (1945–1954) and later as President (1954–1964). The Christian Social People's Party ( lb, Chrëschtlech Sozial Vollekspartei, french: Parti populaire chrétien-social, german: Christlich Soziale Volkspartei), abbreviated to CSV or PCS, is the largest political party in Luxembourg. Pierre Grégoire (9 November 1907 – 8 April 1991) was a Luxembourgish politician in the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), journalist, and writer. Before turning to politics full-time, he wrote for the ''Luxemburger Wort'' newspaper. Before World War II, he organised the development of the CSV's precursor, the Party of the Right, along with Jean Baptiste Esch.
