Mini-Roman 2 Diamond
Mini-Roman or Mini-Roman 2 Diamonds is contract bridge convention whereby the opening bid of 2 shows a three suited hand and 11-15 high card points (HCP). The convention is meant to help responder to judge, more quickly, the right level of the contract and the best trump suit (or if notrump would be better). History The Roman Club system, developed in the 1950s, included a treatment of these three suited hands with 2 showing a weaker hand and 2 a stronger hand. In contract bridge, various bidding systems have been devised to enable partners to describe their hands to each other so that they may reach the optimum contract. Roman Club
Roman Club ( it, Fiori Romano) is an artificial bridge bidding system devised in the 1950s by Giorgio Belladonna and Walter Avarelli of Italy's Blue Team. They used it to win twelve WBF World Teams Championships, three Olympiads and numerous European and National titles. A variant, ''Little Roman'' or ''Arno'', was played by their Blue Team-mates Massimo D'Alelio and Camillo Pabis Ticci. Once radical, ''Roman'' has long been superseded by more advanced relay systems, but it was remarkable for the ideas it introduced or fostered in the bridge world. Blue Club
Blue Club is a bridge bidding system, developed mainly by Benito Garozzo. It was used by the famous Blue Team and became very popular in the 1960s. It has gained a strong following ever since. The main features are: * Strong club system: 1 opening promises 17 or more HCP, with step answers showing controls (K=1 and A=2 controls) or HCP. 1 being negative showing 0-5 HCP and 1 showing 6-12 HCP but with no more than 2 controls, 1 showing 3 controls, 1NT showing 4 controls etc. * Four-card majors: 1 and 1 and 1 openings are limited (12-16 HCP), * Canapé. Major Suit
In the card game contract bridge, the major suits are spades () and hearts (). The major suits are of prime importance for tactics and scoring as they outrank the minor suits while bidding and also outscore them (30 per contracted trick for major suits—compared to 20 for minor suits). Forcing Bid
In the card game contract bridge, a forcing bid is any that obliges the partner to bid over an intermediate opposing pass. Owing to the partnership's bidding system or a bridge convention, partner must "keep the bidding open", i.e. not pass, thereby preventing his left-hand opponent from ending the auction with a pass and enabling the "forcing bidder" to bid further. A forcing bid that creates no further obligation is called ''forcing for one round''. A bid that is ''forcing and promises a rebid'' creates an obligation on the forcing bidder next round (typically, up to some level of the auction). Pass-or-correct Bid
In the card game bridge a pass-or-correct bid (or convertible bid), is a non- forcing bid that asks partner to pass or bid differently based on her/his holding. Pass-or-correct bids are generally used as responses to multiway bids. A typical example is the 2 response on a multi 2 diamonds opening that asks partner to pass with a weak hand with long spades, or to bid three hearts with a weak hand and long hearts. This 2 bid implies length in hearts and denies length in spades. Ruff (cards)
In trick-taking games, to ruff means to play a trump card to a trick (other than when trumps were led). According to the rules of most games, a player must have no cards left in the suit led in order to ruff. Since the other players are constrained to follow suit if they can, even a low trump can win a trick. In some games, like Pinochle and Preferans, the player who cannot follow suit is required to ruff. In others, like Bridge and Whist, he may instead discard (play any card in any other suit). Normally, ruffing will win a trick. But it is also possible that a subsequent player will overruff (play a higher trump). Historically, ruff meant to "rob" i.e. exchange a card with the stock. The weak two bid is a common used in the game of contract bridge, where an opening bid of two diamonds, hearts or spades signifies a weak hand, typically containing a long suit. It may be deployed within any system structure that offers a forcing artificial opening to handle hands of (eg) 20+ points, or an expectation of 8 or more tricks. It is form of preemptive bid. In contract bridge, a strong two-bid (also known as a forcing two-bidFrancis et al (2001), p. 443.Francis et al (2001), p. 163. Multi Two Diamonds
Multi-coloured 2 diamonds, is a contract bridge convention whereby the opening bid of 2D shows a defined range of hand types. These always include a weak-two bid in a major suit, and the second option, that must be a strong. The inherent ambiguity as to both suit and strength makes a powerful, and hence popular. It was originally considered disruptive, but is now thought fairly easy to defend. It is commonplace in the British Isles, permitted in international competition, but rarely seen North America.
