Minangkabau Cultural Documentation And Information Center
Minangkabau Culture Documentation and Information Center ( id, Pusat Dokumentasi dan Informasi Kebudayaan Minangkabau, or PDIKM) is a museum and research center for Minangkabau culture, located in the city of Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The center building is in the form of a Minangkabau traditional house (''rumah gadang''), with a large garden that slopes up to the main gate. Establishment The center was initiated by Bustanil Arifin and Abdul Hamid, in which the laying of the first stone began on August 8, 1988 and was formalized since December 19, 1990. Minangkabau people ( min, Urang Minang; Indonesian or Malay: ''Orang Minangkabau'' or ''Minangkabo''; Jawi: Ù…Ù†Ú ÙƒØ¨Ùˆ), also known as Minang, are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the Minangkabau Highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The Minangkabau's West Sumatran homelands was the seat of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, believed by early historians to have been the cradle of the Malay race, and the location of the Padri War (1821 to 1837). Minangkabau are the ethnic majority in West Sumatra and Negeri Sembilan. Minangkabau are also a recognised minority in other parts of Indonesia as well as Malaysia, Singapore and the Netherlands. Pagaruyung
Pagaruyung (Ú¤Ø§Ú¬Ø§Ø±ÙˆÙŠÙˆÚ ; also Pagarruyung, Pagar Ruyung and, Malayapura or Malayupura) was the seat of the Minangkabau kings of Western Sumatra, though little is known about it. Modern Pagaruyung is a village in ''Tanjung Emas'' subdistrict, Tanah Datar regency, located near the town of Batusangkar, Indonesia. History Beginnings Adityawarman is believed to have founded the kingdom and presided over the central Sumatra region between 1347 and 1375, most likely to control the local gold trade. The few artefacts recovered from Adityawarman's reign include a number of stones containing inscriptions, and statues. Some of these items were found at ''Bukit Gombak'', a hill near modern Pagarruyung, and it is believed a royal palace was located there. Adityawarman Museum is a State Museum (''Museum Negeri'') located in Padang, West Sumatra, Western Sumatra. As a State Museum, Adityawarman Museum is officially known as the State Museum of West Sumatra (''Museum Negeri Sumatera Barat''). The museum displays ethnographic collections of items related to the culture of the Province of West Sumatra, particularly the culture of Minangkabau people, Minangkabau and Mentawai people, Mentawai. History The idea for a museum dedicated to the culture of West Sumatra was first proposed by Amir Ali, the Head of the Department of Education of Culture of the Province of West Sumatra.
