Mimmo Cuticchio
Mimmo Cuticchio (born 30 March 1948) is an Italian cantastorie, puppeteer, actor and playwright. Life and career Born in Gela, the son of Giacomo, a puppeteer who had a travelling theatre, Cuticchio inherited the family legacy and in 1973 founded the Teatro dei Pupi Santa Rosalia, an Opera dei Pupi in Palermo. The same year he wrote his first cantastoria play, ''Giuseppe Balsamo conte di Cagliostro''. In 1977 he founded the association and stage company "Figli D'Arte Cuticchio". During his career Cuticchio focused on renewing the arts of Opera dei Pupi and cantastoria, opening them to contemporary themes and to civil commitments. As an actor, he appeared in several films, notably playing a leading role in Emanuele Crialese's ''Terraferma''. Gela
Gela (Sicilian and ; grc, Γέλα) is a city and (municipality) in the Autonomous Region of Sicily, Italy; in terms of area and population, it is the largest municipality on the southern coast of Sicily. Gela is part of the Province of Caltanissetta and is the only in Italy with a population and area that exceed those of the provincial capital. Gela was founded in 698 BC by Greek colonists from Rhodes and Crete; it was an influential ''polis'' in Sicily in the 7th and 6th centuries BC and became one of the most powerful cities until the 5th c. Emanuele Crialese
Emanuele Crialese (born 27 May 1965) is an Italian screenwriter and film director. He is a native of Rome and studied filmmaking in New York City. Biography Emanuele Crialese was born on July 26, 1965 in Rome to Sicilian parents. He studied filmmaking at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, from where he graduated in 1995. During this time he made several short films including '' Heartless'' (1994). His first feature film, '' Once We Were Strangers'' (1997), was an Italian-American co-production, funded by a producer who had noticed Crialese during his apprenticeship in the United States. Between 1998 and 2000, Crialese worked in theater and on a drafting of a cinematic treatment of Ellis Island along with producer Robert Chartoff, the producer of ''Raging Bull'' and ''Rocky''. ''Terraferma'' is a 2011 Italian drama film directed by Emanuele Crialese. The film premiered at the 68th Venice International Film Festival. The film was selected as the Italian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. Plot On Linosa, fishermen are punished for saving illegal immigrants (boat people) from the sea and, back on shore, letting them go, because this amounts to facilitating illegal immigration. Therefore young local Filippo does not allow them on his boat.
