Caspar Milquetoast
Caspar Milquetoast is a comic strip character created by H. T. Webster for his cartoon series ''The Timid Soul''. Webster described Caspar Milquetoast as "the man who speaks softly and gets hit with a big stick". The character's name is derived from a bland and fairly inoffensive food, milk toast, which, light and easy to digest, is an appropriate food for someone with a weak or "nervous" stomach. History In 1912, Webster drew a daily panel for the ''New-York Tribune'', under a variety of titles—''Our Boyhood Ambitions'', ''Life's Darkest Moment'', ''The Unseen Audience''. In 1924, Webster moved to the ''New York World'' and soon after added ''The Timid Soul'' featuring the wimpy Caspar Milquetoast. Milquetoast developed out of the design of another character, Egbert Smear, or ''The Man in the Brown Derby''. The character was said to have ushered in a new era of timidity in comics. In 1927, Webster trained himself to draw left-handed in three months after a severe case o ...

Minor Characters In Bloom County
The following are minor characters from Berkeley Breathed's comic strip ''Bloom County''. Though significant enough to have appeared multiple times in the strip, they were not crucial to the strip's overall development, and disappeared without much (if any) explanation long before Breathed segued into his next comic, '' Outland''. Though the strip's various compilations do not do them justice, the original cast of characters in ''Bloom County'' were Milo, Bess, and Major Bloom, along with a basset hound named "Rabies" whose thoughts could be read à la Snoopy; the first year of strips are mysteriously omitted from all compilations save the ''Bloom Library'', although a selection did find publication in a 1986 anthology collection '' Bloom County Babylon: Five Years of Basic Naughtiness''. Most of the strip's most memorable characters debuted later on, with Milo being the only key character to appear for the duration of the strip's run. Alphonso Ali Alphonso Ali was the first sign ...

The Pacifist
"The Pacifist" is a science fiction short story by British writer Arthur C. Clarke, first published in 1956 in ''Fantastic Universe''. It appears in his collection of "science fiction tall tales," ''Tales from the White Hart''. The story deals with a computer programmer's revenge on his unreasonable military boss by tinkering with software code in a way that makes his boss the laughingstock of the organization. "The Pacifist" details the construction of a supercomputer within "a cavern in Kentucky" (Clarke may have been thinking of Mammoth Cave, then suspected (and later known) to be the world's longest known cave system). The purpose of the computer is military battle simulation, and the details of all known historical battles have been stored in the computer's data banks. The computer's designer, nicknamed "Dr. Milquetoast" by the story-within-a-story's narrator, works under the harsh supervision of a military General. By way of revenge, Dr. Milquetoast programs the c ...
