Mills Cross Telescope
The Mills Cross Telescope was a two-dimensional radio telescope built by Bernard Mills in 1954 at the Fleurs field station of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in the area known now as Badgerys Creek, about 40 km west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Each arm of the cross was 1500 feet (450 m) long, running N–S and E–W, and produced a fan beam in the sky. Mills said it "consists of two rows of 250 half-wave dipole elements backed by a plane wire mesh reflector; the individual dipoles are aligned in an E-W direction." The cross operated at a frequency of 85.5 MHz (3.5m wavelength), giving a 49 arcminute beam. When the voltages of the two arms were multiplied a pencil beam was formed, but with rather high sidelobes. The beam could be steered in the sky by adjusting the phasing of the elements in each arm. A radio telescope is a specialized antenna and radio receiver used to detect radio waves from astronomical radio sources in the sky. Radio telescopes are the main observing instrument used in radio astronomy, which studies the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by astronomical objects, just as optical telescopes are the main observing instrument used in traditional optical astronomy which studies the light wave portion of the spectrum coming from astronomical objects. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)'s radio astronomy observatories are collectively known as the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), with the facility supporting Australia's research in radio astronomy. It is part of CSIRO's business unit known as CSIRO Space and Astronomy.. CSIRO currently operates four observatories as part of the ATNF. Mills Cross Array
The Mills Cross Array, or the 96-acre antenna array, was a Mills Cross Telescope-style radio telescope located in Seneca Maryland, near Washington, D.C. Constructed in June, 1954, it was operated by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The full array consisted of two arms, each 2047 feet in length with 66 dipole antennas. The dipole antennas were supported by unpainted wooden poles, connected with wires. The telescope had around of wire, with an army surplus truck housing the phase-switching radio receiver. It was built to conduct a 22.2 MHz (13.5 meter) sky survey, and at that frequency it had a beam about 2.5 degrees wide. In 1955 the array was used by Bernard F. Burke and Kenneth Franklin to discover 22.2 MHz radio emission from Jupiter, which they tentatively attributed to thunderstorm-like activity in Jupiter's atmosphere. Molonglo Cross Telescope
The Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) is a radio telescope operating at 843 MHz. It is operated by the School of Physics of the University of Sydney. The telescope is located in Hoskinstown, near the Molonglo River and Canberra, and was constructed by modification of the east–west arm of the former Molonglo Cross Telescope, a larger version of the Mills Cross Telescope. Design The MOST consists of two cylindrical paraboloids, 778m x 12m, separated by 15m and aligned east–west. A line feed system of 7744 circular dipoles collects the signal and feeds 176 preamplifiers and 88 IF amplifiers. Wilbur Norman "Chris" Christiansen (9 August 1913 – 26 April 2007) was a pioneer Australian radio astronomer and electrical engineer. Family The son of Wilhelm Christiansen (1883-1920), and Ilma Clarice Christiansen (1885-1983), née Jones, Wilbur Norman Christiansen was born in Elsternwick, Victoria on 9 August 1913.
