Million Dollar Weekend
''Million Dollar Weekend'' is a 1948 American film noir directed by, and starring, Gene Raymond, based on his original story. Plot Stockbroker Nicholas Lawrence (Gene Raymond) has grown tired of his tedious life in Los Angeles and decides one day to escape, stealing cash and securities from his company worth about a million dollars. He buys a plane ticket to Shanghai via Honolulu. Cynthia Strong (Osa Massen, credited as Stephanie Paull) has just attended her husband's funeral service. After the ceremony, she goes straight to the airport and buys a ticket. As Cynthia leans back in her seat, she is caught by surprise when a man she knows named Alan Marker (Francis Lederer) comes up to her and claims he saw her murder her husband. Marker wants half the life insurance money to keep his mouth shut, but Cynthia denies His accusation. Gene Raymond (born Raymond Guion; August 13, 1908 – May 3, 1998) was an American film, television, and stage actor of the 1930s and 1940s. In addition to acting, Raymond was also a singer, composer, screenwriter, director, producer, and decorated military pilot. Early life Raymond was born August 13, 1908 in New York City. He attended the Professional Children's School while appearing in productions like ''Rip Van Winkle (operetta), Rip Van Winkle'' and ''Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch''. His Broadway debut, at age 17, was in ''The Cradle Snatchers'' which ran two years. (The cast included Mary Boland, Edna May Oliver, and a young Humphrey Bogart.) Eagle-Lion Films was a British-American film production company owned by J. Arthur Rank intended to distribute British productions in the United States. In 1947, it acquired Robert R. Young's PRC Pictures, a small American production company, to produce low-budget features to accompany its British releases. The studio, which was located at 7324 Santa Monica Boulevard (one block away from the Samuel Goldwyn Studios), became a producer of B-movies. Eagle-Lion was also a film distribution company under the name of Eagle-Lion Distributors Limited in the United Kingdom and Eagle-Lion Films Inc. in the United States. In 1954, the film lot was purchased by the Ziv Company for production of its syndicated television programs. It has long since been demolished. History The company was founded in September 1946.
