Milligna (or Your Favourite Spike)
''Milligna (or Your Favourite Spike)'', also known as "The Milligna Show", was a radio comedy sketch show, written by Spike Milligan, performed by John Bluthal, Vilma Hollingbery, and Milligan himself. Musical interludes were provided by Ray Ellington and the Alan Clare Quartet. Alan Clare also took speaking parts. The show was broadcast on Radio 4 in 1972. Its name was based on Milligan's introduction in '' The Last Goon Show of All'' as "Spike Milligna, the well-known typing error". Format The show progressed through a loosely linked collection of sketches, one-liners, puns and ethnic jokes. Bluthal provided multiple voices, including impressions of an African chieftain, Alan Whicker, and a Jewish Londoner. Vilma Hollingbery came on when the script required a female voice but otherwise remained in the background. Alan Whicker
Alan Donald Whicker (2 August 1921 – 12 July 2013) was a British journalist and television presenter and broadcaster. His career spanned almost 60 years, during which time he presented the documentary television programme ''Whicker's World'' for over 30 years. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2005 for services to broadcasting. Background Whicker was born to British parents in Cairo, Egypt, in 1921. When he was three years old his father Charles became seriously ill and the family moved to Richmond in Surrey, where he and his mother remained after the death of his father. He attended Haberdashers' Aske's Boys School, where he excelled at cross-country running. During the Second World War he was commissioned as an officer in the Devonshire Regiment of the British Army. British Rail Sandwich
In British popular culture, the phrase British Rail sandwich recollects the sandwiches sold for consumption on passenger trains of the former British Rail (BR), during the period of nationalization from 1948 to 1994. Its use arose through comedic references to the sandwiches as emblematic of the unappetising fare available aboard Great Britain's railway service during that time. According to former BR caterer Myrna Tuddenham, the poor reputation of BR sandwiches likely derived from the practice of keeping the sandwiches "under glass domes on the counters in refreshment rooms until the corners turned up". Despite the many jokes at its expense, British Rail documents show that in 1993, its last full year as a public company, eight million sandwiches were sold. ''The World of Beachcomber'' was a surreal television comedy show produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC inspired by the Beachcomber (Pen name), Beachcomber column in the ''Daily Express'' newspaper. Description The show, like the column, consisted of a series of unrelated pieces of humour. Links between the items were provided by Spike Milligan, dressed in a smoking jacket and cap, as in the cartoon logo above the newspaper column.
