Mill Creek, Bakersfield
Mill Creek is a district in Downtown Bakersfield, California. It is primarily a mixture of residential and commercial on the east side of downtown. Since the mid-2000s, the district has gone through major redevelopment. These included, the development of the Kern Island Canal into a walking path (also called Mill Creek), the redevelopment of Central Park, construction of the Federal Courthouse, and construction of several new housing and commercial developments. Prior to the 2000s, this district did not exist, and was generally referred to simply as "part of downtown." When the project was being developed, it was discovered that a mill used to be located on the Kern Island Canal in the new district. It was decided to name the new district "Mill Creek" after the mill. Downtown is the central business district for Bakersfield, California. It contains several of the cities major theaters, sporting complexes, museums, and historical landmarks. What is considered to be “downtown” Bakersfield varies. In order to define Downtown Bakersfield, it is important to first define the Central Bakersfield region. Kern Island Canal
Kern Island Canal is an irrigation canal in Kern County, California. It primarily irrigates farmland located on the Kern Lakebed, south of Bakersfield. It originates from a common diversion at Manor Street in Bakersfield, which also supplies the Carrier Canal and Eastside Canal. The common diversion originates from the Kern River about south of Gordon's Ferry. The canal travels south, roughly parallel to Union Avenue. At 30th Street, just north of SR 178 (Crosstown Freeway), it shifts farther west, running closer to R Street. From here, the canal travels through the Mill Creek Linear Park and Central Park. From there, it continues to meander south until just north of Brundage Lane, where it diverges. The three branches are known as the West, Central, and East Branch. They terminate at the Kern Lakebed. Mill Creek (Bakersfield)
Mill Creek is a linear park located in Bakersfield, California. It runs along the Kern Island Canal between Golden State Avenue and California Avenue in downtown, although there is a gap between 19th Street and the BNSF railroad yard. The center of the park is Central Park, the only park in downtown. The park contains a lake with spray fountains and the “Mill Creek” bridge. Bakersfield station is an intermodal facility in Bakersfield, California. It is the southern terminus of Amtrak California's ''San Joaquins'' route, with Amtrak Thruway buses continuing to Amtrak stations and bus stops throughout Southern California and Nevada. The station opened with a celebration on July 4, 2000. It contains an train station with two platforms and three tracks, as well as a 17-bay bus station.
