The Military ranks of the Socialist Republic of Romania are the military insignia used by the Army of the Socialist Republic of Romania. The ranks replaced the Military ranks of the Kingdom of Romania in 1947, following the proclamation of the Republic. The ranks were replaced by the Romanian Armed Forces ranks and insignia, following the Romanian Revolution. Since Romania was a member of the Warsaw Pact, it shared a rank structure to the Soviet Union. The Army of the Socialist Republic of Romania ( ro, Armata Republicii Socialiste România), known as the Army of the Romanian People's Republic ( ro, Armata Republicii Populare Romîne), until 1965 was the army of the Socialist Republic of Romania (Romanian People's Republic until 1965) from 1947 to 1989. Following the Romanian Revolution in 1989 it was renamed into the Romanian Armed Forces. It consisted of the Ground Forces, the Navy and the Air Force. History In 1944 the Red Army invaded Romania in the Jassy-Kishinev Offensive, causing the overthrow of Ion Antonescu's regime via a Royal coup. In 1945, new military regulations were developed based on those of the Red Army and in 1946, Romania came completely under the influence of the Soviet Union and became part of the Eastern Bloc. The Romanian Navy ( ro, Forțele Navale Române) is the navy branch of the Romanian Armed Forces; it operates in the Black Sea and on the Danube. It traces its history back to 1860. History The Romanian Navy was founded in 1860 as a river flotilla on the Danube. After the unification of Wallachia and Moldavia, Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the ruling Domnitor of the Romanian Principalities, decided on 22 October 1860 by order no. 173 to unify the navies into a single flotilla.
