At the 1936 Winter Olympics, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1936, a military patrol competition was held. The International Olympic Committee refused admission of this sport into the Olympic Program, but the expressed desires of Adolf Hitler forced the International Olympic Committee, IOC to make this program a demonstration sport. Military patrol is considered the precursor to biathlon. The 1936 Winter Olympics, officially known as the IV Olympic Winter Games (german: IV. Olympische Winterspiele) and commonly known as Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 ( bar, Garmasch-Partakurch 1936), were a winter multi-sport event held from 6 to 16 February 1936 in the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The country also hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics, which were held in Berlin. It was the last year in which the Summer and Winter Games both took place in the same country (the cancelled 1940 Olympics would have been held in Japan, with Tokyo hosting the Summer Games and Sapporo hosting the Winter Games). Herbert Leupold (20 June 1908 – 22 December 1942) was a German cross country skier and biathlete who competed in the 1930s. Leupold was born in Wüstewaltersdorf. He was killed during World War II in Navaginskaya, Krasnodar Krai. Leupold won a silver medal in the 4 x 10 km at the 1934 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Sollefteå. Albert Bach (November 29, 1910 – July 22, 2003) was an Austrian Nazi, soldier, at last in the rank of a Generalmajor, and skier. In 1936 he was also leader of the national Olympic military patrol team, which finished fourth at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Biography Bach was born in Treffen, a son of a farmer. After visiting the Realgymnasium in Villach, he joined the former Bundesheer on September 1, 1931. On October 26, 1931, he became a member of the NSDAP (No. 612,639). He also was a member of the NS-Soldatenring. On September 30, 1932, he passed his officer training in Enns and at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. For his deployment during the Austrian Civil War he was awarded with the Bronze Medal for Service to the Republic of Austria.
