Military Cathedral Of St. Mary Queen Of Peace, BrasÃlia
The Military Cathedral of St. Mary Queen of Peace (also Military Cathedral of BrasÃlia; pt, Catedral Militar Santa Maria dos Militares Rainha da Paz) is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. It is located on the west side, between the N1 and S1 tracks of the Monumental Axis, close to the Urban Military Sector (SMU). It was designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on September 12, 1994. It belongs to the Military Ordinariate of Brazil and has as archbishop Osvino José Both. Its architecture in triangular format refers to a tent. Pope John Paul II laid the foundation stone in 1991 during his visit to Brazil. BrasÃlia
BrasÃlia (; ) is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located at the top of the Brazilian highlands in the country's Central-West region. It was founded by President Juscelino Kubitschek on 21 April 1960, to serve as the new national capital. BrasÃlia is estimated to be Brazil's third-most populous city. Among major Latin American cities, it has the highest GDP per capita. BrasÃlia was a planned city developed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Cardozo in 1956 in a scheme to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector, and the Embassy Sector. Monumental Axis
The Monumental Axis ( pt, Eixo Monumental) is a central avenue in BrasÃlia's city design. The avenue begins on the National Congress of Brazil building and is considered part of the DF-002 road. Its first section is known as "Ministries Esplanade" ("Esplanada dos Ministérios"), as it is surrounded by ministries buildings. Many important government buildings, monuments and memorials are located on the Monumental Axis. A common urban legend persists that the Monumental Axis is the widest road in the world, where " 00 to 160cars can drive side by side". This is untrue, as the road consists of two avenues with six lanes on either side; a total of twelve lanes. However, the street has been featured in the Guinness Book of Records as having the widest median strip of a highway in the world. Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (15 December 1907 – 5 December 2012), known as Oscar Niemeyer (), was a Brazilian architect considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture. Niemeyer was best known for his design of civic buildings for BrasÃlia, a planned city that became Brazil's capital in 1960, as well as his collaboration with other architects on the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. His exploration of the aesthetic possibilities of reinforced concrete was highly influential in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
