Military Band of the Southern Military District is a military band unit of the Russian Armed Forces's Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of Russia, military band service. Currently the band serves under the headquarters of the Southern Military District based in Rostov-on-Don. Overview The Military Band of the Southern Military District was formed on August 2, 1962 on the basis of a military band in the 106th Communication Regiment with a permanent residence in Rostov-on-Don. In 2012, the band came under the command of the 175th Luninets-Pinsk Headquarters Brigade of the Southern Military District. The band has taken part in many international tattoos including the Sevastopol Military Festival in 2013, the Spasskaya Tower Military Music Festival and Tattoo in 2015 and The Amur Waves International Military Bands Festival in 2018. The Amur Waves International Military Bands Festival is an annual military music event and military tattoo held in Khabarovsk on Lenin Square, Khabarovsk. Participating in the festival are Russian and foreign military bands, folk groups, and honor guards. The festival is considered to be one of the most significant events in the cultural life of the capital of the Russian Far East. Oleg Fedoseev is the current director of festival. History The idea of a military tattoo in Khabarovsk came from Lieutenant General Valery Khalilov, then in his position as director of the Military Band Service of the Armed Forces of Russia, during his visit to the city in 2009 as one of the judges for the Nikolai Mikhailov Massed Bands Contest. Military Band of the Western Military District is a ceremonial band unit of the Russian Armed Forces's which currently serves in the headquarters of the Western Military District. The band is one of one of the oldest military bands in Russia. History Its history dates back to 1882, when Emperor Alexander III signed a decree on the establishment of the Court Brass Band. On October 1, 1917, an order was issued to disband the band due to the Russian Revolution. It was recreated in February 1918 only to be disbanded again three years later in 1921.
