Milestone (electoral District)
Milestone is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, south of Regina. Originally named "South Regina", this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905; although a riding of that name had been contested in the North-West Territories since 1888. It was dissolved and merged with the Bengough district (as Bengough-Milestone) and parts of Thunder Creek and Qu'Appelle before the 18th Saskatchewan general election in 1975. It is now part of the constituency of Indian Head-Milestone. Provincial Rights Party
The Provincial Rights Party was a Canadian political party founded and led by Frederick W. A. G. Haultain in 1905 to contest elections in the new province of Saskatchewan. It was the successor to the eastern branch of the Northwest Territories Conservative Party. Haultain had been Premier of the North-West Territories prior to the province's creation. He hoped to lead a government in the place of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, which was backed by the federal government of Wilfrid Laurier. In the 1905 election, the Provincial Rights Party won nine seats and 47% of the vote, and the Liberals won 16 seats and 52% of the vote. In the 1908 election, to an expanded 41 seat legislature, the Provincial Rights Party won 14 seats with 47% of the vote, losing again to the Liberals. Haultain was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal by Prime Minister Robert Borden in 1912, and the Provincial Rights Party became the Saskatchewan Conservative Party. The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Prior to 1942, it was known as the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan. The Conservative Party of Saskatchewan's first leader, Frederick W. A. G. Haultain, was so upset at sections of the federal legislation that created the province relating to immigration, education, and natural resources that he renamed the party the Provincial Rights Party for the 1905 and 1908 general elections. The party reverted to the Conservative name for the 1912 election, after which Haultain left politics to become Chief Justice of Saskatchewan. 1912 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1912 Saskatchewan general election was held on July 11, 1912 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Premier Walter Scott led the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan to a third term in office with a significant increase in the share of the popular vote. The opposition, now renamed from the Provincial Rights Party to the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan and led by Wellington Bartley Willoughby, lost both votes and seats in the legislature. James Benjamin Hawkes
James Benjamin Hawkes (9 January 1857 - 29 July 1936) was a Canadian pioneer and politician who served as an MLA in the Northwest Territories. Early life James Hawkes came to Canada from England in 1880 to work on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Next, he constructed narrow gauge track to Lethbridge. He married Marian Shaw in 1885. The couple homesteaded near Balgonie and also ran the community's general store. He was said to reign over Balgonie "as a sort of rural king." Hawkes soon owned one of the largest wheat farms on the Prairies, and during the hard times following the crop failures of 1893 and 1894 rendered great assistance to his suffering subjects. He served as Justice of the Peace for Balgonie and from 1891-1897 he served as the postmaster as well. Cyril Pius MacDonald
Cyril Pius "Cy" MacDonald (February 29, 1928 – November 14, 2015) was an educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Milestone from 1964 to 1975 and Qu'Appelle-Wolseley from 1975 to 1978 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and educated in Saskatoon, at Notre Dame College in Wilcox and at St. Francis Xavier University, where he received a BEd degree. In 1951, he married Ann Sullivan. MacDonald taught school in Yorkton and in Wilcox. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Saskatchewan assembly in 1960 before being elected in 1964. MacDonald served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Industry and Commerce and as Minister of Welfare. MacDonald ran for the leadership of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party in 1971. Jacob Walter Erb
Jacob Walter Erb (January 16, 1909 – January 1, 1990) was an educator, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Milestone from 1948 to 1964 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and then Liberal member. He was born near Lang, Saskatchewan, the son of Ferdinand Erb and Rosa Wagner, and was educated at Luther College in Regina, at the University of Manitoba and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. After going on a concert tour in the United States, Erb returned to Regina, where he taught music and was dean of boys at Luther College. He married Edna Helsa in 1938. In 1946, he left the college to take up farming in the Lang district. Saskatchewan New Democratic Party
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. Frank Keim Malcolm (April 3, 1893 – June 19, 1973) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Milestone from 1944 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of John A. William Pedersen (politician)
William Pedersen (February 28, 1883 – January 31, 1970) was an American-born farmer, rancher and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Milestone in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1934 to 1944 as a Liberal. He was born in Rorbeck, Iowa, the son of Peter Pederson and Anna C. Yarby, both natives of Denmark, and came to Canada in 1907. Pederson was educated in Des Moines and at the Agricultural College in Ames. In 1907, he married Sarah Rebecca Christenson. He served as reeve of the rural municipality of Caledonia from 1925 to 1934. Pederson was also a Mason, president of the Milestone Agricultural Society and president of the Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders' Association.
