Mikołaj Sapieha (1581–1644)
Mikołaj Sapieha ( lt, Mykalojus Sapiega) (1581-1644) also known as ''Pobożny'' (''" Pious"'') was a nobleman of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and ''Great Standard-Keeper'' of Lithuania. He was also Voivode of Minsk, Voivode of Brześć Litewski and Castellan of Vilnius. Early life Sapieha was born in 1581, the son of Mikołaj Sapieha. He was the brother of Krzysztof Sapieha. Together with his brother Krzysztof he studied throughout Europe; travelling (between 1608 and 1613) to Vienna, Trier, Mainz, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Matla. In 1613 the brothers returned to Kodeń. Mikołaj began a political career, becoming a Deputy in the Sejm (Parliament) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1621 and then a Member of the Lithuanian Tribunal in 1622. Between 1625 and 1631 he travelled again, visiting Italy. It was during that time – according to legend – that he was miraculously cured and stole a holy painting from Rome. Mikołaj Sapieha (1588–1638)
Mikołaj Sapieha ( lt, Mikalojus Sapiega) (1588–1638) was a voivode (Voivode of Mińsk (1611–1618), Voivode of Nowogródek (1618–1638)) in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Son of Bohdan Pawłowicz Sapieha and brother of Paweł Stefan Sapieha. Friend of Lew Sapieha. Father of Tomasz Sapieha. He studied abroad, from 1582 in Bologne, later in Rome and Orléans. After returning to his homeland, in 1588 he became the podkomorzy of Grodno. In 1596 he was sent with a diplomatic mission to Sweden by King of Poland Sigismund III Vasa, in order to negotiate for Zygmunt's rights to the throne of Sweden. In 1603 he was a deputy to Sejm. From 1608 to 1609 he rested at health facilities in Cieplice and Karlsbad. In 1611 he became the Voivode of Mińsk.
