Mike Tavioni
Mitaera Ngatae Teatuakaro Michael Tavioni (born 1947) is a Cook Islands artist and writer. A master carver, he has been described as a ''taonga'' (treasure). His role in the pacific art community is recognised from New Zealand to Hawaii. Tavioni was born on Rarotonga. He was educated at Tereora College, then at Northland College, Kaikohe and Massey University in New Zealand, graduating with a degree in Agriculture & Horticulture. After working as a public servant in the Agriculture Department, he became a full-time artist. In 2019 he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Auckland University of Technology. He has worked in a wide variety of mediums, including printing, painting, wood, stone, and bone, as well as traditional tattooing. In 1975 he began printing t-shirts using wooden blocks. Rarotonga
Rarotonga is the largest and most populous of the Cook Islands. The island is volcanic, with an area of , and is home to almost 75% of the country's population, with 13,007 of a total population of 17,434. Te Kura O Te ʻAu People's Movement
Te Kura O Te Au People's Movement is a political movement in the Cook Islands. It has several founding members, but its current leader is Tim Tepaki. It is currently unrepresented in the Cook Islands Parliament. The People's Movement was originally established in 2009 as a pressure group in response to the introduction on Sunday flights to the island of Aitutaki. It initially denied being a political party, but in May 2010 confirmed that it would contest the 2010 general election. The party supports political reform, including a "major" reduction in the size of parliament. It proposes suspending all Sunday flights to Aitutaki, followed by a referendum to determine whether than ban will be made permanent. The party will select candidates in July 2010. Following the selection process the candidates will elect a party leader and committee. The party ran six candidates in the 2010 election, but none were successful. The British Empire Medal (BEM; formerly British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service) is a British and Commonwealth award for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. The current honour was created in 1922 to replace the original medal, which had been established in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire. 2010 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 17 November 2010 in order to elect 24 MPs to the Cook Islands Parliament. The elections were won by the Cook Islands Party, which won 16 of the 24 seats. Voter turnout was 78%. A binding referendum on whether the number of MPs should be reduced from 24 was held at the same time as the election. Parliament will sit for the first time following the election in February 2011. Background The Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Jim Marurai, which had governed since 2004, effectively collapsed in December 2009 after Finance Minister Terepai Maoate was sacked for his mishandling of a bid to buy the Toa fuel tank farm. Avatiu–Ruatonga–Palmerston or RAPPA is a Cook Islands electoral division returning one member to the Cook Islands Parliament.
