The Puerto Rico Soccer League or PRSL is an association football league in Puerto Rico founded in 2008 and the first unified football league in the island's history. Association football had been growing in popularity in recent years, and this was an attempt to further develop the game on the island. The previous highest league in the country was the Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol de Puerto Rico. It shares Division I status with Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Puerto Rico. History The league was founded in 2008 starting with 8 teams. The first president of the league was Mike Roca. Over the past few years football has grown throughout the island and is among the top sports in Puerto Rico, behind baseball, basketball, boxing, and volleyball. A newly formed club, they will play in the Puerto Rico Soccer League, the island's first unified football competition. They will play their home matches at the 18,000 capacity Hiram Bithorn Stadium, which has been traditionally used for baseball. Juncos (, ) is a town and one of the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico. The 2009 CFU Club Championship was the 11th edition of the CFU Club Championship, the annual international club football competition in the Caribbean region, held amongst clubs whose football associations are affiliated with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU). Tornados de Humacao is a Puerto Rican football club based in Humacao, which currently plays in the Puerto Rico Soccer League. It is affiliated to Pachuca of Mexico. History The team plays in Nestor Morales Stadium in Humacao. Early years The team's origins date back to 1994, when Colombian coach Jorge Eliécer Paredes brought together a group of boys in the neighborhood of Villa Universitaria, Humacao to practice the sport every Saturday. It wasn't until 20 April 1995 that the team officially registered in the FPF as Club de Fútbol Tornados de la Ciudad Gris, and that same year they started participating in federation sponsored youth tournaments and events.
