Mike McCormack (writer)
Mike McCormack (born 1965) is an Irish novelist and short-story writer. He has published two collections of short stories, '' Getting It In the Head'' and '' Forensic Songs'' and three novels - '' Crowe's Requiem,'' '' Notes from a Coma'' and ''Solar Bones''. He has been described as "a disgracefully neglected writer". McCormack was born in London. He grew up on a farm in Louisburgh, County Mayo, and studied English and philosophy at UCG. In 1996, he was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. In 1998, ''Getting It In the Head'' was voted a ''New York Times'' Notable Book of the Year. A story from the collection, "The Terms", was adapted into an award-winning short film directed by Johnny O'Reilly. In 2006, '' Notes from a Coma'' was shortlisted for the Irish Book of the Year Award. In 2010, John Waters in ''The Irish Times'' described it as "the greatest Irish novel of the decade just ended". Irish Book Awards
The Irish Book Awards are Irish literary awards given annually to books and authors in various categories. In 2018 An Post took over sponsorship of the awards from Bord Gais Energy. It is the only literary award supported by all-Irish bookstores. First awarded in 2006, they grew out of the Hughes & Hughes bookstore's Irish Novel of the Year Prize which was inaugurated in 2003. Since 2007 the Awards have been an independent not-for-profit company funded by sponsorship. The primary sponsor is An Post, the state owned postal service in Ireland. There are currently nine categories, seven of which are judged by the Irish Literary Academy, two by a public vote. There is also a lifetime achievement award. Aosdána Members
Aosdána ( , ; from , 'people of the arts') is an Irish association of artists. It was created in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers with support from the country's Arts Council. Membership, which is by invitation from current members, is limited to 250 individuals; before 2005 it was limited to 200. Its governing body is called the Toscaireacht. Formation Aosdána was originally set up on the suggestion of writer Anthony Cronin, by ''Taoiseach'' Charles Haughey, well known for his support for the Arts, although Fintan O'Toole has argued that this also served to deflect criticism of Haughey's political actions. This is a list of current and former members of Aosdána, an association of artists whose work is deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to the creative arts in Ireland. Details of membership Membership of Aosdána is based on a system of peer nomination and election and is limited to a maximum of 250 living artists who must be resident in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland for five years, although there exist exceptions where artists resident outside of Ireland are eligible "if the body of their work is deemed to significantly benefit the arts in Ireland". The Cúirt International Festival of Literature (pronounced ) is an annual literary festival held since 1985 in Galway in Ireland. The Irish language word ''cúirt'' means "court". The festival consists of a variety of events taking place over the course of a week each April with attendances and contributions from Irish and international writers. It includes readings of poetry and fiction, discussions, poetry slams, book launches, masterclasses, spoken and musical performances, multimedia events, theatre, and visual art.
