Mier, Tamaulipas
Mier (), also known as ''El Paso del Cántaro'', is a city in Mier Municipality in Tamaulipas, located in northern Mexico near the Rio Grande, just south of Falcon Dam. It is northeast of Monterrey on Mexican Federal Highway 2. (26°28'N 99°10'W) In 1990, the population was recorded at 6,190. By the 2010 census, it had dropped to 4,762 inhabitants. It has an agricultural economy centered on cotton, sugar cane, corn, and livestock. History The town was founded on March 6, 1753. The land was originally owned by Felix de Almandoz. Land later passed on to General Prudencio Basterra who married Felix's sister Ana Maria. 19 Families from Camargo, Tamaulipas, Camargo formed the new settlement. In 1753 Captain Jose Christoval Ramirez and his wife were part of the nineteen families who settled in Mier. A ''presidente municipal'' ( English: "municipal president") is the chief of government of municipios in Mexico. This title was also used in the Philippines during the Spanish and American colonial periods; it is comparable to a mayor of the town or city. Raiding, also known as depredation, is a military tactics, military tactic or operational warfare "smash and grab" mission which has a specific purpose. Thomas Green (general)
Thomas "Tom" Green (June 8, 1814 – April 12, 1864) was an American soldier and lawyer, who took part in the Texan Revolution of 1835–36, serving under Sam Houston, who rewarded him with a land grant. Green was clerk of the Texas Supreme Court until the outbreak of the American Civil War, Civil War, when he became a Confederate States Army, Confederate cavalry leader. After winning several victories, including the Battle of Valverde and the recapture of Galveston, Texas, Galveston, he was promoted brigadier and assigned command of the cavalry division of the Trans-Mississippi Department. Ewen Cameron (soldier)
Captain Ewen Cameron (1811 – April 26, 1843) was an officer in the Army of the Republic of Texas, who participated in the ill-fated Mier Expedition. Biography Cameron was born in Scotland, probably into a Scottish Gaelic-speaking family in Lochaber, and was named in honor of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, 17th Chief of Clan Cameron. He emigrated first to Kentucky and came to Texas in 1836, arriving just after the Texas Revolution. In late December 1842, the Mier Expedition was a raid on the Mexican border settlement of Ciudad Mier, which turned into the Batalla de Mier when the Mexican Army arrived. Cameron and the other Texans were taken prisoner, after inflicting a large number of casualties on the other side. Battle Of Salado Creek (1842)
The Battle of the Salado was a decisive engagement in 1842 which repulsed the final Mexican invasion of the Republic of Texas. Colonel Mathew Caldwell of the Texas Rangers led just over 200 militia against an army of 1,600 Mexican Army soldiers and Cherokee warriors, and defeated them outside of San Antonio de Bexar along Salado Creek. As a result of this action, French-Mexican commander General Adrián Woll retreated south and back into Mexico. Background On January 9, 1842 word came from General Mariano Arista in Monterrey that Mexico was planning to invade and retake Texas. He stated that all who would not resist would be given amnesty and protection during this invasion.
