Midyat District is a district of the Mardin Province of Turkey. The seat of the district is the town of Midyat and the population was 118,625 in 2021. Status With the administrative reform in 2012, Midyat District contains seventy-two neighborhoods of which twelve form the town of Midyat. Midyat ( ku, Midyad, Syriac: ܡܕܝܕ ''Mëḏyaḏ'', Turoyo: ''Miḏyoyo'', ar, مديات) is a town in the Mardin Province of Turkey. The ancient city is the center of a centuries-old Hurrian town in Upper Mesopotamia. In its long history, the city of Midyat has been ruled by various different leaders and nations. According to the 1960 population census Midyat was home to 570 Christian households and only 30 Muslim households. Before World War I, Midyat was the only town in the Ottoman Empire with an Assyrian/Syriac majority. The city is populated by Syriac people, Kurds and Mhallami people. Estel neighborhood is about 80 to 85% Kurdish-populated. History The history of Midyat can be traced back to the Hurrians during the 3rd millennium. Gülgöze, Midyat
Inwardo or Gülgöze ( syr, ܥܝܢ ܘܪܕܐ - ''Iwardo'' or ''In wardo'', ''Ayin Warda'', ''Ain Wardo'') is a neighbourhood in the municipality and district of Midyat, Mardin Province, Turkey. Gülgöze is populated by Assyrians and had a population of 272 in 2021. History First World War Prior to the start of the First World War, the village had about 200 families, all of whom belonged to the Syriac Orthodox Church. During the Assyrian genocide, tens of thousands of refugees from throughout Tur Abdin arrived here for safety. At one point, the number of people in the village was up to 21,980 people. Refugees arrived from villages including Habasnos, Midyat, Bote, Keferze, Kafro Eloyto, Mzizah and Urnas. Even refugees from outside Tur Abdin arrived, coming from villages such as Deqlath, Bscheriye, Gozarto, Hesno d Kifo and Mifarqin. Gelinkaya, Midyat
Gelinkaya () is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Midyat, Mardin Province, Turkey. Its population is 1,542 (2022). Before the 2013 reorganisation, it was a town ('' belde''). The village is populated by Kurds and Mhallami. Etymology The word 'Keferhuvar' means 'village with white stones' in Syriac. History Gelinkaya is a former Assyrian village. It became the administrative center for the Mhallami in the 1850s when a beg from nearby Dêrizbin settled in the village, after a conflict with his relatives. Elbeğendi, Midyat
Elbeğendi ( syc, Kafro Tahtayto) is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Midyat, Mardin Province in southeastern Turkey. It is located in the historical region of Tur Abdin. In the village, there are churches of Mor Jacob and Mor Barsaumo, the Virgin Mary, and Mor Bosus. The village is populated by Assyrians and had a population of 46 in 2021. History In 1900, Kafro Tahtayto was inhabited by 30 Assyrian families. Amidst the Assyrian genocide, in 1915, the village's population fled to the Monastery of Mor Malke,Kloster Mor Malke'.
