Midweek (BBC Radio 4)
''Midweek'' was a British weekly radio magazine series broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It was aired on Wednesday at 09.00 and repeated later the same day at 21.00. For most of its run it was presented by Libby Purves and each week several guests discussed various topics with her. ''Start the Week'' and '' Stop the Week'', also broadcast on Radio 4, employed similar formats. The programme ended in March 2017 as part of a schedule change. History The first edition, initially billed in the ''Radio Times'' as ''Mid-week'' (billed as ''Midweek'' from October 1981), was broadcast on Thursday 23 November 1978. The programme moved to Wednesday mornings in October 1979. The original presenter was television documentary maker Desmond Wilcox. Ned Sherrin
Edward George Sherrin (18 February 1931 – 1 October 2007) was an English broadcaster, author and stage director. He qualified as a barrister and then worked in independent television before joining the BBC. He appeared in a variety of radio and television satirical shows and theatre shows, some of which he also directed. Early life Sherrin was born at Gawlers Farm, Low Ham, Somerset, the second son of smallholding farmer Thomas Adam Sherrin (1889–1965) and Dorothy Finch (née Drewett; 1895–1980). He was educated at Sexey's School, in Bruton, Somerset, and rendered his national service in the Royal Signals, being commissioned as an officer in 1950. Clare Mary Francis (born 17 April 1946) is a British novelist who was first known for her career as a yachtswoman who has twice sailed across the Atlantic on her own and she was the first woman to captain a successful boat on the Whitbread Around the World race. Peter Murray James, OBE (born 19 September 1925), known professionally as Pete Murray, is a British radio and television presenter and actor. He is known for his career with the BBC including stints on the Light Programme, Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 4. In the 1950s, Murray became one of Britain's first pop music television presenters, hosting the rock and roll programme ''Six-Five Special'' (1957–1958) and appearing as a regular panellist on ''Juke Box Jury'' (1959–1967). Mavis Nicholson (née Mainwaring; 19 October 1930 – 8 September 2022) was a Welsh writer and radio and television broadcaster. She was born in Wales, and worked throughout the United Kingdom. Early life Nicholson was born on 19 October 1930 in Briton Ferry, where she spent her childhood. Her father worked as a crane driver at the Port Talbot Steelworks in Aberavon. She attended Neath County School, leaving in 1949. She then studied English at Swansea University, although was unable to pass her final exams in English, forfeiting a degree. Valerie Singleton (born 9 April 1937) is an English television and radio presenter best known as a regular presenter of the popular children's series ''Blue Peter'' from 1962 to 1972.
