Midtown Y Photography Gallery
Midtown Y Photography Gallery was a pioneering nonprofit organisation in New York that offered photographers an opportunity to publicly exhibit their work. The Gallery ran from 1972 until 1996 directed in turn by photographers Larry Siegel, Sy Rubin and Michael Spano. Establishment Larry Siegel, with the help of Robert Menschel and NYSCA, founded the Midtown Y Photography Gallery in 1972 as a corridor gallery at the Emanu-El Midtown YM-YWHA on 14th Street. Larry Siegel had previously established the Image Gallery, which along with Helen Gee’s Limelight Gallery was one of the few venues in New York City, apart from the Museum of Modern Art, that held photography exhibitions in the 1950s and early 1960s. Sage Sohier
Sage Sohier is an American photographer and educator. Biography Sohier teaches photography for years in different educational institutions, serving as assistant professor in Massachusetts College of Art. She was lecturer on Visual and Environmental Studies in Harvard University from 1991 till 2003, Assistant Professor of Art in Wellesley College from 1997 till 1999. Ari Marcopoulos (born Aristos) is an American self-taught photographer, adventurer and film artist. Born in the Netherlands, he is best known for presenting work showcasing elusive subcultures, including artists, snowboarders and musicians. He lives and works in New York. Marcopoulos is represented by Fergus McCaffery in New York and Tokyo, and Galerie Frank Elbaz in Paris. Early life Marcopoulos was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 1957. His father was from Greek origin and was born in Egypt. He was a pilot and moved to The Netherlands to work for KLM. In The Netherlands, he met a young Dutch model, Marcopoulos's mother. Abelardo Morell
Abelardo Morell (born 1948, Havana, Cuba) is a contemporary artist widely known for turning rooms into camera obscuras and then capturing the marriage of interior and exterior in large format photographs. He is also known for his 'tent-camera,' a device he invented to merge landscapes with the texture and composition of the ground where he places his camera and tripod to record the simultaneity of close and far, majestic and mundane. Formerly, Morell was a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Life and career Morell and his family fled Cuba in 1962, moving to New York City. Dawoud Bey (born David Edward Smikle; November 25, 1953) is an American photographer and educator known for his large-scale art photography and street photography portraits, including American adolescents in relation to their community, and other often marginalized subjects. Henry Horenstein (born 1947) is an American artist, photographer, filmmaker and educator. He is the author of over 35 books, including a series of instructional textbooks. Robert Menschel
Robert B. Menschel (1930-2022) was an American investment banker and philanthropist. He had a 50 year relationship with Goldman Sachs as a Partner or Senior Director. The author of a financial book, and the winner of the 2015 Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. Early life Robert Menschel was born circa 1930. His father was a real estate investor. He has a brother, Richard, who is also a Goldman Sachs senior director and philanthropist. Menschel graduated from Syracuse University's College of Business Administration in 1951. Louis Stettner
Louis Stettner (November 7, 1922 – October 13, 2016) was an American photographer of the 20th century whose work included streetscapes, portraits and architectural images of New York and Paris. His work has been highly regarded because of its humanity and capturing the life and reality of the people and streets.
