Midnite Movies
''Midnite Movies'' is a line of B movies released first on VHS and later on DVD by MGM Home Entertainment. The line was begun by MGM in March 2001 following its acquisition of Orion Pictures, which bought out Filmways, the owner of American International Pictures. AIP had a library of B movies from the 1950s and 1960s that were science fiction, horror, and exploitation films. The ''Midnite Movies'' collection was primarily derived from the AIP library (including most of Roger Corman and Vincent Price's horror films) but also included Hammer Film Productions, Amicus Productions, United Artists, Cannon Films, and Empire International Pictures films as well. The DVDs were first released as single films, but most later releases would be double features on single double-sided discs. Home video is prerecorded media sold or rented for home viewing. The term originates from the VHS and Betamax era, when the predominant medium was videotapes, but has carried over to optical disc formats such as DVD, Blu-ray and streaming media. In a different usage, "home video" refers to amateur video recordings, also known as home movies. The home-video business distributes films, television series, telefilms and other audiovisual media in the form of videos in various formats to the public. Empire Of The Ants (film)
''Empire of the Ants'' is a 1977 science fiction horror film co-scripted and directed by Bert I. Gordon. Based very loosely on the 1905 short story "Empire of the Ants" by H. G. Wells, the film involves a group of prospective land buyers led by a land developer, pitted against large mutated ants. It is the third and last film released in A.I.P.'s H.G. Wells film cycle, which include '' The Food of the Gods'' (1976) and '' The Island of Dr. Moreau'' (1977). Plot The opening narration briefly introduces the viewer to the ant and its behavior. It takes note how ants use pheromones to communicate, and how they cause an obligatory response that must be obeyed. "But we (humans) don't have to worry about it..." ''The Dunwich Horror'' is a 1970 American supernatural horror film directed by Daniel Haller, and starring Sandra Dee, Dean Stockwell, and Ed Begley. A loose adaptation of the short story of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft, the film concerns a young female graduate student who is targeted by a man attempting to use her in an occult ritual taken from the ''Necronomicon''. The screenplay was co-written by Curtis Hanson, while Roger Corman served as an executive producer on the film. The film's distributor, American International Pictures, had tentatively planned an adaptation of the Lovecraft story in 1963.
